In 1918, his mother and sister, Muriel, died of influenza (“Anthony Burgess Biography.com”). For the time being, his father left him to go live with his aunt. Burgess’ time was a few years before The Great Depression, which left his family quite poor. After an unknown amount of time, his father remarried and took his son back. Yet, Burgess’ young life did not approve (“Who Is Anthony Burgess? Everything You Need to Know”). His father and new stepmother were uncaring; some accounts claim she was even abusive towards Burgess. He was also beaten at his school, and sexually assaulted by an older woman when he was just a boy (“41 Facts on Anthony Burgess”). In any event, Burgess had a life where at every turn he found himself being put down and rejected. He soon found refuge within music and writing. His father had been a pianist and his birth mother was a dancer and singer. Burgess grew up loving writing and playing the piano. However before even beginning his first book, Burgess was drafted into the British army during 1946. Burgess mainly could be found in the Medical Corps and the Educational Corps (“Anthony Burgess Biography.com”). While there, Burgess witnessed an autopsy being performed. The tragedies did not end here; while serving in the army his wife was assaulted and allegedly raped by American Soldiers. At the time, Lynne was pregnant and this attack was presumably the cause for her miscarriage. Luckily, the two eventually did have a child of their own; his name was Paolo Andrea.
