Developing social awareness involves learning about the dynamics of social relationships between individuals, groups and communities. A socially aware individual values human rights and acknowledges the importance of harmonious social interaction for the developmental progress of human beings. However, one thing that I noticed about the level of awareness of the needs of others is that I cannot see its progress in today’s society.
Considering the experiment my group mates and I have conducted in Sunway College. People surrounding the foyer were far more especially during lunch break. I was seated at the corner of the table in the midst of chaos. I was carrying more than a dozen of papers and five books. As I stood up, my books were purposedly dropped onto the floor. This experiment was repeated at the canopy walk, in a smaller passage way with people passing by every minute.
An immediate reaction was lacking from the bystanders that were seated or generally near the incident. The sensitivity development to my needs according to my situation was very poor. Hence, I felt majority of the students did not value, respect and acknowledged my need for help. Students should increase their sensitivity to harmony and social justice. This means lending a hand to others fairly regardless of feeling safe and comfortable or the number of helpers already present.
Nevertheless, some did step out of the comfort zone to experience social activism. Three students came to my aid and helped carried my books that were scattered on the floor. In my opinion, they developed empathy by consciously imagining themselves in my position or even less fortunate situation. Whether my level of popularity is higher or style of dressing was better mattered not because they were committed to social awareness.
But in general, just helping for the sake of helping isn’t good enough
