Research became an integral part of my life over the course of one summer when I took part in the McNair Post Baccalaureate Achievemnet Program. This program lasted approximately two months but that short amount of time drastically changed everything I had planned for my future. Within the first semester of college, students may find themselves struggling to cope with the changes college brings, some even choosing to drop out. While some stress is necessary, large amounts can be countered by eating well, exercising, sleeping properly, avoiding harmful substances and addressing mental health. Students are known to perform stronger academically when they are in a healthy state, and many students eat poorly, have irregular sleep schedules and do not exercise. Being a first generation college student is something that I take great pride in being. The panelists from yesterday radiated pride and responsibility, in upholding their name as a first generation college student. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to them, however, it was hard for me to identify with some of their feelings and attitudes about attending a four-year university.
