to college, they should be required to take honor classes before graduation. According to Chris Kenning “In Kentucky in 2011 just 38 percent of Kentucky 's 41,784 graduate were deemed prepared for college” (Are they ready for college). The rest of the students were deemed unprepared for college. The students have to take remedial class before they are able to take the college class. Karen Arenson said “more than 70 percent of incoming students at City University of New York in recent year have failed one or more placement test” (The learning gap). Which that makes the college student stay in college longer than some student wanted to be in there. It is the job of the high school to have classes that will prepare the students for college and so that the student doesn't struggle during their first semester of college. Karen Arenson said “about 70 percent of high school graduates go to college, but roughly a third is deemed unprepared when they get there” (The Learning gap). I think students should be encouraged by their high school to take class load that will help them prepare themselves. According to the New York Times said that the average ACT Score has showed students in some states don’t have a good enough score to be accepted into a good college, let alone do well at a university (New York Time). High school students think their high school are preparing them for college, but the students realize that they are going through their first year of college. If the student has to take courses before they take the main classes them more likely to drop out of college.
I think high school standard need to be similar to college standard so that it will for college, so when their students graduate they will be ready for college and not struggle during their first semester at college. If the students are going to go to college they should be required to take at least two honor class because this would help the students not struggle during their first year of their college year. The problem is that some students do not realize they are going to go to college, which put them at a disadvantage they are prepared to go to college. The high school requires course to graduate are not to the same standard for entry to college.
Second reason why high school students struggle in college because high school need to prepare them for the amount of work.
The amount of work that students do in high school is less than the amount of work in college. The college work load is much harder than the work load in high school. In college, students have to do work in a short amount of time, but in high school students have a longer amount of time to do the work. According to Karen Arenson “some high school may not even offer college preparatory courses, or they may be watered down or taught badly” (The learning gap). The work is more structural during college than during your high school career. I think high school work need to be as hard as college because that would help prepare the students for college. Then the students wouldn't struggle during their first year of college. The high school work load should as rigorous as college work because it will make the students not to struggle when their first year of college. This would make course for the first year student, not to struggle. The high school course should prepare students for college so that students don’t struggle during their first year of college. The type of work the students should be as hard as college work because it will prepare them for their college
career. Third reason, that students struggle in their first year of college is because they are not used to the amount of free time. In high school every day, which students didn’t have much free time. Now there’s no one telling students to do your work or get up and go to class. In high school students have people telling them to do their work. In college students don’t have people telling to do their work. There is more free time during college, so students need to know how to handle the free times so they don’t struggle during their first year of college. Students need to learn how to use their free time wisely because students have work to complete in a short amount. Managing their free time is critical because if they don’t manage their free time they will struggle. There is a lot of work that students do in college that will be harder than work that students did in high school. Free time can help students or hurt them if the student doesn’t use it the right way.
In conclusion, there three different ways that high school fail to prepare their student for college. Which they will struggle during their first year of college. Free time is one of the factors that can help student struggle during college. High school need to prepare their students
