Why I Chose College
In my opinion, college is what you make of it. For me, it has been an opportunity in which I was able to position myself to receive better career opportunities. In doing so, I will be better equipped to give back to the community. This experience has allowed me to improve upon my social skills, as well as, become more knowledgeable, and confident assisting individuals that are vulnerable. Throughout the course of these last two years, many of my peers, including myself, have bonded with new friends. These established relationships created an extended family, a source of support, and have the potential to become business networking relationships in the near future. It is these experiences that have made the college experience worth wild for …show more content…
There does not seem like it would be a dull moment when there’s such a variety in the social work field. For instance, a social worker can work in the school system, the jails, with DHS, DCFS, organizations and many more fields of social work. This would allow me to be able to work with diverse groups of individuals. I personally enjoy people. Working with a variety of people will help me to help them resolve different problems. On a day to day basis where problems can be different; this will allow me to help by giving me experience with others different from myself. The diversity in the social work field can be very rewarding. Learning to deal with different situations only strengthens your ability to help others. Needless to say, I want to be a social worker because it is where I’m called to be. As an example, I started out attending college to become a nurse. Then I realized this is not what I want to do. I was so confused about where I was going in life. I prayed and prayed to the creator to direct my path. Finally, I researched different professions and it hit me. The creator had answered me saying, “Go into social work. This is where I’m placing you.” To be able to help improve a person’s life is what it is all …show more content…
The reason being is; I like how you are able to deal with your clients on a more individual level. I feel at this level I would be able to better engage and serve my clients. Also, this area interests me because the interaction is more personal with those you’re helping. Being engaged in the micro field of social work, I could help with: healthcare, housing, counseling, substance abuse and the list goes on. As a result, my passion is to work with at-risk youth and the family aspect of the social work field. At this level in the field, you get to intervene on the part of the child. In my opinion, children are sometimes under-represented. They deserve to have someone represent them. As well, you also can help the family as a whole in this line of social work. The children and family are very important areas of social work to me. I believe it is better to help at the micro level first. At least that is what I want to do. Think about it for a second; if we help families help themselves then they can share what they have learned with their children. If each family as they grow older pass down this wealth of information maybe things will get better as time goes on. This will then help fix problems on the macro level once problems are fixed at the micro

The challenges of being a social worker include how “social work involves helping others and getting involved with people in such a close way can sometimes put you in harm. The risk is real and social workers need to be cautious” (“5 Pros”). No matter what career a person chooses, there will always be risks. Social work comes with big risks. Most people go to or are assigned to a social worker because they have a problem in their lives that they need help solving. That can sometimes mean they did something dangerous and you may be in harm's way. Another negative thing about being a social worker is that it “might be labeled by some to be rewarding, but it can also be emotionally draining” (“5 Pros”). A social worker spends most of their day listening to the problems in the lives of their clients, and giving advice to their clients. That can be very emotionally draining because a certain amount of patience and listening skills are required to get through the day. Some days a social worker may have a more difficult client, and they put more effort and time into that one client which can be very…

Deciding what populations and types of clients with whom I want to work with, in the field of social work, is one of the most important decisions ever, regarding my career. From as early as childhood, I have always known that I want to work with children in whatever career path I embarked on. After deciding education and teaching was not the career I wanted to choose as my forever career, I always envisioned myself being a child and family social worker. I feel so comfortable with this population because I have always felt a need to want to improve the quality of life for families and children. I did not have the best childhood-due to experiencing homelessness, addictions and having to mature at an early age, but I knew the warm feeling that I received when my family was together and thriving was the best. According to the Code of Ethics of the National Association of Social Work (NASW), “the primary mission of the social work profession is to enhance human well-being and help meet the basic human needs of all people, with particular attention to the needs and empowerment of people who are vulnerable, oppresses, and living in poverty” (NASW 2010). Children are one of the most vulnerable and helpless beings in the world, so they need someone to fight for them. This is the population is where I feel I can help to enhance the social functioning of children and families the most.…

There are many reasons why I chose a profession in the social work field. Some of the reasons why I chose to work in this area stem from my childhood experiences. As a child, I was pretty much on my own, my parents were pretty much absent and I had to take care of myself and sometimes them, I also took care of my siblings. The only teacher I had to encourage me was my 7th grade Social Studies teacher, Mr. Schaal, (he was killed in a car wreck after I started high school) with no guidance, I began to get into trouble. I had to grow up fast, so I always was the “motherly” figure among my group of friends (although I did let them talking me into things).…
