Why I Chose Social Work
Ever heard the saying that if you choose a career you have a great passion for, you will never work a day in your life? This is a philosophy I have stood by throughout my life. I have always had a passion for helping people, particularly young people and children who are socially and economically disadvantaged to overcome obstacles in their lives and achieve their full potential. My desire to make this a reality is reflected in my three years study of BSc (Hons) Applied Criminology and Sociology undergraduate degree and volunteer work in charity organisations (youth and care sectors) that share the same values and ensure that a positive impact is made in the lives of service users.
While studying my degree and volunteering has significantly improved my communication skills, my patience, and my initiative, it has also helped me develop a good knowledge and understanding of what Social Work entails and how to respect every individual and their differences in terms of their values, beliefs, cultures, and preferences.
Having researched Social work to an excellent extent, I fully understand how complex working within this area will be. I spoke to a qualified Social Worker during my Child Protection Course at university and read up on practice policies. I found that Social work will require the ability to work under pressure, multi-agency

I am a go-getter and once I set my mind on achieving something, I do not give up. Failure is no option for me, I believe I am an ideal candidate for this degree and believe that I can convey this in my role as a Social Worker if given the opportunity and with the excellent quality of placements offered, I will enhance my skills and develop new skills to cope effectively with the challenges of a career in Social Work and to help people make the most of their own abilities and empower them to be the best they can

Throughout the course we learned about different fields of social work, the complications that come with the job, and the different people you will encounter. Thus, changing our thoughts and feelings towards social work. Before taking the class our thoughts about social workers were more or less simple minded. I started off working as a Day Camp leader and that’s when I realized how much I enjoyed working with youth, and it made me realize how much children benefit from routine and rules. I then started working with the YMCA, where I was working with underprivileged people as well as middle class people and how everyone kind of worked together to make a system that benefitted everyone. My strengths are that I am very compassionate about others, I think every person deserves safety and to be validated within society. I believe I know enough about Social work theories that I could help anyone, from focusing on their strengths to functional theory to anti-oppressive social work. My weakness would be that I don’t have the experience I want with all aspects of social work, I’d like to get experience within a hospital setting vs. a school setting. I’ve worked with youth and people with disabilities, but I would also like to explore elderly case management. I have learned that I am a compassionate person but I think I have a great sense of humor and fun, I think I could combat the burnout experienced by social workers and other humanitarian professions by taking time for myself and keeping…
