Why I Want To Be A Player
Nothing has brought out my potential to be a leader more than playing softball. I have never been the girl with a cannon for a throwing arm nor have I been dubbed as the team’s ‘power hitter’ with five home runs in a single season, but that has not stopped me from seeing my true potential and recognizing what strengths I do have to offer. I am aware of my shortcomings yet I am still striving to be the best player I know. My teammates have seen me work my way from having no idea what softball is to being a starter on varsity. I look at the new players who are just like I was my first year and I am rooting for them to be the power hitters with cannon arms even though I may not be. I look at all the girls around the world who are told they cannot be great players and great leaders and I am rooting for them too.

What I do have to offer is the power to teach people the fundamentals since those are what softball and everything else in life boils down to. I cannot teach new players to throw a ball from the outfield to home plate without teaching them how to accurately throw a ball to someone standing two feet away from them. And I cannot teach women to be extraordinary and how to fight

I want them to make their own decisions and become their own leaders. I will not always be there to call out the plays and tell my teammates where to throw the ball if it comes to them. I need them to be able to think on their own feet because on the field, decisions must be made quickly. There is no time to wait for me to make the decisions and relay them to everyone else. Life is just like softball, moments flash by within seconds and they are completely unpredictable. But that cannot stop you from playing the game. If someone is strong and educated all on their own, they can surely lead themselves to victory. I want leadership to be a quality everyone

Keys for a Softball Player Possibly one of the most overlooked sports, due to its male competition of baseball, softball flies under most radars, as baseball appears to be the harder sport due to the flame throwing, power hitting and defensive specialists of the MLB. Although, softball is equally as hard as baseball in just about every aspect. Due to the sports being similar in style and how the game is played, the keys for a player are just about the same, if not the same.…

In sports and in life all together there are all sorts of people who have different outlooks on games or life. I have played softball for fourteen years so I have seen all types. Throughout my athletic career I have noticed three distinctive types of teammates. One type is a negative teammate, another is an indifferent teammate, and lastly is the positive teammate.…

My accomplishments in softball were second team third baseman for my freshman and sophomore year and my junior year I got the first team utility player. I have got voted team captain in softball. In softball we had two coach changes, out first coach was Mr. Chavez and the coach currently is Mr. Torgeson. These two men have different coaching methods and it was very hard to adjust. Chavez was all about the hitting and Torg was all about bunting. There overall look at how the game is played are completely different from each other. Therefore when he had a coaching change it was a big shock for me. As a freshman, I played on the varsity team and I really loved getting to have that experience. I loved playing softball and I have played since I was about 5. In Softball I seem to always hurt myself, I have hip problems and I just recently had surgery on my wrist because of softball. Therefore I learned that you need to take care of yourself and work out to keep everything attached. You also need to practice hard to succeed because in my opinion, I think hitting a softball is super hard and you need lots of practice succeed. Softball is a great example of you will fail first before you succeed because in softball there is three strikes and you might not hit the first pitch but you can hit the next one. Therefore batting in softball you might fail first before he succeed. “Never let the fear of striking out get in your…

Leadership is a prized commodity, however, it is not one that has always come naturally to me. I was a rather quiet kid growing up, and so I rarely let my voice be heard while I was at school. Despite my timid nature, I was able to develop enough self-confidence to open up to others and share my feelings through baseball. Baseball is truly a team sport, requiring constant communication and trust between teammates. As such, the close companionship I held with my team mates created the ideal environment for me to develop my leadership skills. Base running was always my strongest skill, so I constantly found myself teaching my teammates how to gain the advantage. I became the unofficial base running coach year after year, even as the teams changed…

She described herself as superb and an exceptional hitter who was able to “run fast to the bases.” She enjoyed softball and it was the only sport that she played as a part of a team. However, she would head down to the park and play tennis with her friends, though she admits she was not accomplished in the sport. I play tennis on my school’s team and I have become quite skilled in the sport because I love it enough to practice often. I, on the other hand, am subpar at softball…

Hi , I’m Lilli Burton . I am in sixth grade, and play baseball with the boys. A barrier i have faced is trying to play baseball because I am a girl. Whenever I try - out , they say “ She would be great at softball.” I face the barrier in Summer and Fall when it is time for baseball. A lot of coaches are sceptical about putting me on their team, but I don’t let that stop me from trying and trying again.Until someone accepts me for who i am. To overcome this barrier , I used integrity by sticking up for my beliefs and not always caring about what people think of me . I also used determination by never giving up and try my best to get better and better everyday. My barriers are similar to Jackie Robinson’s because we both wanted to do something…

One of the most important lessons that softball helped me perfect is teamwork. Teamwork makes the dream work, and it is the secret that makes common people achieve an uncommon result. Another vital factor is time management because everyone knows nothing good comes from being late or taking too long. In softball and life, communication is the key to success. My communication skills have been enhanced due to needing to be constantly heard and to avoid misinterpretation on and off the field. Softball can either make or break you, but it can also teach you important things you can carry on in…

I entered high school with a chip on my shoulder, bitter from being the smallest and being disregarded by my classmates. This perceived injustice drove me to work extremely hard. Night after night, I would be in the basement working on my swing, wanting to prove my worth to everyone. After months of practicing, my softball skills were starting to progress, and I was finally starting to grow. I then began to experience success on the softball field as well.…

To be a successful softball player, it requires much strength, time, and energy. There isn’t a sport out that there that you don’t have to work hard at. I am constantly practicing to improve my skill that requires an excessive amount of effort because I have bad days just as everyone else, and many times I’m just plain worn out. Staying fully devoted to this game isn’t an easy task. I have to give up several weekends with my friends and family so that I may travel to tournaments, sometimes several hours away. Other…

Softball means the world to me. Some may see it as just a sport, but to me it’s much more than that. Every time I step on the field I feel like I’m where I’m supposed to be. Perhaps my favorite thing about softball is that it’s an escape. Whatever is bothering me just doesn’t seem to matter anymore. My worries melt away as soon as I pick up a ball and glove. The field doesn’t judge you and no matter how many times you mess up, it still welcomes you back with open arms.…

Currently, I mentor two athletes and I pass-on a lot of what I have learned in my sport psychology classes in my 2nd undergraduate work at Auburn and here at UWS. I have a high school baseball player (currently in the state championship playoffs) and a friend who is focused on playing softball in the 2020 Olympics with Mexico’s women’s softball team. Both are growth-minded athletes in a fixed mindset environment where sport psychology is not considered. However, they are both thirsty for knowledge about the mental side of baseball/softball in order to grow, improve through effort, and have the tools to face any situation with confidence and the ability to succeed. Both have intuitively used mental training tools and skills, but didn’t know they were real or normal. If anything, I have helped them learn that sport psychology is real. We are all currently reading (in my limited spare time) “Mental Toughness: baseball’s winning edge”by Karl & John Kuehl and Casey tefertiller and “Heads-up Baseball” written by Dr. Ken Ravizza and Tom Hanson. This journal article and my review will be sent to both of these athletes for their review and to supplement their reading. Due to their environments, the Growth Hitting System will most likely not be an option for full implementation. However, this article can be used as a means of reinforcing the growth-mindset and how…
