My favorite part about being a speech language pathologist is helping individuals effectively communicate their wants and needs. I can easily remember the first time a student of mine signed, "more", independently. At this time, we have so many roads to steer and find the most successful means of communication for our students. Being able to assess and truly understand individual students' current functional levels, is the most fulfilling aspect of being a Speech Language Pathologist. I am able to work with students at their level and determine therapy, programs, and goals to help their educational goals. My philosophy is to provide therapy in a way that is consistent with developmental research and provide students with a strong foundation. This is very appropriate to treating children with language disorders. I believe that students with severe language disorders need to be taught a form of functional communication. This means that a child who is not able to speak but is able to understand what is said to them should be given access to a new means of communication. Through play therapy and technology I use my knowledge and background to provide therapy to all of my students so that they have the opportunity to learn "some form of functional
