It was not until I was fifteen that I was able to figure out what I wanted to do with my life. This realization came from spending eight weeks working as a camp counselor to a large group of six year old boys. When I started working part of me was excited to finally have a job and responsibility, but the other part of me dreaded spending my entire summer away from my friends. particular group of campers were rambunctious and challenging but still sweet and so excited to be at camp. Seeing this energy the kids brought, and how much each one looked up the counselors made me want to give them the best possible camp experience. They made me excited to come to work every day and see how each child has grown throughout the weeks.
Every summer since then each group has come with their own set of challenges, but they also brought new energy and kept me just as excited to work as I was on my first day when I was fifteen.
While being a camp counselor is extremely challenging, and some might look down on the fact that I have spent my summers working at a summer camp instead of interning or having a job that pays more. The truth is I would not have spent my summers anywhere else, being able to help build and shape these kids minds in a positive way was the biggest reward. Seeing the change in each child from June to August made me want to wake up and do this everyday no matter what challenge could be presented .
