Why I Want To Become A Social Worker
The desire I have to be a social worker is motivated from personal experience. Throughout my childhood, I encountered many difficulties and struggles. Personally, I think my struggles came from being born to teenager parents. Many struggles I met were: being neglected by my birth-parents, being diagnosed as a special-needs child, being mentally and emotionally abused, encountering bullying in school, and many more difficulties. Despite my struggles, I have never let my past determine my future. Furthermore, I have excelled in numerous areas of life and achieved several set goals.
After the completion of an undergraduate degree in Sociology, I wish to continue my journey towards my goals with a Master’s degree in Social Work from the University of Alabama. To obtain this degree is worth more than professional gain to me. I aspire to help change lives with my anticipated profession, more specifically children’s lives. My many life struggles has moved me to grow a passion for trouble and at-risk youth.

My mother aged with some health issues. She had hypertension and very high cholesterol, and was placed on some medication. Years after she started taking the medication my three brothers and I travelled overseas and my mother stopped taking her medicines. Her blood pressure became extremely high that the doctors could not bring it down to normal, she ultimately had a stroke and died within a week. This led to personal difficulties for our family, but with the support of a clinical social worker, we had the ability, strength, and acceptance of the negative situation. The experience we had with the social worker molded me into having an interest in the profession, to be able to assist the people that needs outside help when it comes to some problems. The challenges of being a social worker include how “social work involves helping others and getting involved with people in such a close way can sometimes put you in harm. The risk is real and social workers need to be cautious” (“5 Pros”). No matter what career a person chooses, there will always be risks. Social work comes with big risks. Most people go to or are assigned to a social worker because they have a problem in their lives that they need help solving. That can sometimes mean they did something dangerous and you may be in harm's way. Another negative thing about being a social worker is that it “might be labeled by some to be rewarding, but it can also be emotionally draining” (“5 Pros”). A social worker spends most of their day listening to the problems in the lives of their clients, and giving advice to their clients. That can be very emotionally draining because a certain amount of patience and listening skills are required to get through the day. Some days a social worker may have a more difficult client, and they put more effort and time into that one client which can be very…

Deciding what populations and types of clients with whom I want to work with, in the field of social work, is one of the most important decisions ever, regarding my career. From as early as childhood, I have always known that I want to work with children in whatever career path I embarked on. After deciding education and teaching was not the career I wanted to choose as my forever career, I always envisioned myself being a child and family social worker. I feel so comfortable with this population because I have always felt a need to want to improve the quality of life for families and children. I did not have the best childhood-due to experiencing homelessness, addictions and having to mature at an early age, but I knew the warm feeling that I received when my family was together and thriving was the best. According to the Code of Ethics of the National Association of Social Work (NASW), “the primary mission of the social work profession is to enhance human well-being and help meet the basic human needs of all people, with particular attention to the needs and empowerment of people who are vulnerable, oppresses, and living in poverty” (NASW 2010). Children are one of the most vulnerable and helpless beings in the world, so they need someone to fight for them. This is the population is where I feel I can help to enhance the social functioning of children and families the most.…

Relationships are such an important aspect to the process of human growth, and they impact each and every one of us. There are many reasons why I chose a profession in the social work field. Some of the reasons why I chose to work in this area stem from my childhood experiences. As a child, I was pretty much on my own, my parents were pretty much absent and I had to take care of myself and sometimes them, I also took care of my siblings. The only teacher I had to encourage me was my 7th grade Social Studies teacher, Mr. Schaal, (he was killed in a car wreck after I started high school) with no guidance, I began to get into trouble. I had to grow up fast, so I always was the “motherly” figure among my group of friends (although I did let them talking me into things).…
