Having studied topics such as health and safety, effective communication and equality diversity and rights it has equip me with the ability to learn many relevant skills which can be applied and used within an everyday life working as a Biomedical Scientist alongside other professionals in a multi-disciplinary team. Taking health and social care has allowed me to understand the various demands and situations that I may find myself working in within a laboratory setting in a hospital. A Level Sociology has given me the ability to apply my knowledge and research to various concepts. This has helped me with my application skills which can assist me in the Biomedical Science field with diagnosis of disease, for example when matching various symptoms and results to a particular disease. Learning about equality, diversity and rights within this sector has been of particular interest. Working in a health and social care sector involves working alongside people who are of a different race, religion, age, ethnicity and sexuality and it is important to make sure that all individuals are treated fairly. I have also enjoyed learning about nutrition and the principles of healthy eating, and the impact of poor nutrition, for example, on childhood obesity. I feel strongly about promoting good nutrition and am currently planning a healthy eating and cooking session with a group of students who I am working with. This year I have also enrolled for GCSE Biology, which I am studying through a distance learning college, and this has confirmed my desire to study a science based course at a higher level.…

The American healthcare industry is experiencing a streak of technological breakthroughs at an unimaginable rate, and I aspire to one day be a forerunner for innovators of the field to follow. I find this field unique in its intimacy to that of the average person, just one of the many things that give the health sciences their powerful allure. The human body is one of the most intrinsically fascinating machines…

As well as benefiting from the academic aspects of the course, I believe that the work placement has been hugely significant in my personal and professional development. During the placement learning opportunity I was based with a social worker in a small unit attached to a hospital. The unit specialises in palliative care services to patients and carers who are affected by life threatening illnesses. I was also fortunate to have the opportunity to liaise with many other agencies that were in some way related to the organisation.…

I chose a forensic laboratory this raised my awareness of antiseptic techniques in a laboratory as you would not want to contaminate collected DNA and the importance of accuracy in a chemical experiment, such as, titration this is transferrable to Nursing as you would need to accurately measure a medical dosage before prescribing it, taking inconsideration a patients age. Health and Social care has given me awareness of how the NHS first began from the the Beveridge Report and from this led the establishment of a system of social security and the National Health Service after the end of the war. Studying Philosophy has enabled my analytical skills especially when writing essays another skill I could use in Nursing when assessing patient’s needs and writing a medical report from that.…

Much has happened since I graduated from the School of Public Health in 1986. I achieved my dream of working in a hospital setting when I secured my first job as a Management Accountant at Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro. There I especially enjoyed developing relationships with managers from many departments as I assisted them with financial reports and budget information. Although I aspired to have enough experience one day to be eligible for an administrative role in a clinical area, my job provided a great opportunity to learn about the inner workings of the…

When studying this course, I was introduced to the health sector for the first time and it was during this time that I saw how important the health sector really is. I studied units such as Developing Effective Communication and Development Through the Life Stages and these units, as well as others, have taught me the qualities required to care and look after individuals. One unit in particular was Vocational Experience; in this unit I completed two work experience placements. My first placement was at a care home for the elderly and my second placement was at a PACE Centre; a school for children with various physical and mental disabilities. These placements have demonstrated a glimpse of what it takes to look after individuals with needs and shown me skills that are vital in the health care industry. Studying a Level 3 BTEC course has also helped me to learn invaluable skills such as meeting deadlines and organisation skills as well as working well in a team. I hope to develop these skills further when studying a university course. In summary, I must say that I really enjoyed studying Health and Social Care as I knew this was the first step for me to achieve my dream of becoming a…

From a young age it became clear to me that a career in healthcare was the right choice for me. Growing up with a mother who worked both in nurse administration and in healthcare reform, and who’s many friends were all involved in health care, I was emerged in healthcare and the many different careers that someone can chose to pursue. Being given the opportunity to see so many healthcare professionals and see what goes into their day to day lives was something I took for granted prior to taking this class and seeing what it takes to get into their chosen fields and how much work is done prior to being considered a professional in that field. This class has shown me all the preparation and intelligence it takes to go into many of the healthcare fields I have considered going into.…
