Throughout my life, I experienced many events that would make most people unable to function socially, emotionally, or academically. These events include two divorces, five house relocations, and a transfer to a new high school during senior year. I consistently failed assignments and could not stay focused during class as my . Most teenagers would have given up here as the disappointment from both their parents and teachers would have destroyed their hopes for a successful future. However, this anguish became a catalyst for what would become a significant restructuring in both my demeanor towards schoolwork and my perspective on the future. Against all odds I was able to bounce back from the discouragement I had faced. I believe that this…
When I have a load of work to do, I manage my time efficiently by sitting down, playing music, with no distractions, and get work done before the assignment’s due date. As soon as I receive a task, whether it be due in a month or the next week, I write it down in my planner, phone, and computer to remind myself to complete my homework. Procrastination is never a problem for me since I plan ahead and stay organized. This allows me to have free time on my weekends, relax from school, and not have to worry much about homework or studying. I’m not employed therefore I have plenty of free time to think about my assignments and give my best effort. Col 101 has taught me how to set my priorities and inspire myself to work hard by adding a treat of some sort to our study time. Listening to this advice helped me find enjoyment in studying for long periods and avoiding struggle or falling behind in my…
Extracurriculars, especially athletics and volunteering, have a very special role in my life and were something that I did not want to forfeit. Although difficult, I have been able to continue to play three varsity sports, swim year round for a competitive club team, volunteer regularly, and participate in clubs at school. The only way I have been able to maintain such a schedule is with excellent time management skills and the support of my family. I take advantage of every opportunity I have to do homework and study, including during my commute to and from school and practice, during breaks between classes, and before practices. In order to avoid unnecessary stress, I must be diligent about completing my homework and projects. These skills will be valuable to me at the CGA, where I will be expected to balance a rigorous course load, athletics, and military…
Being a teenager in high school, you find out who your friends are, what job you may do later on in life, and most importantly who you really are. As Eleanor Roosevelt once said, “People grow through experience if they meet life honestly and courageously. This is how character is built.” Like Mrs. Roosevelt said, character is not given; it is built by your actions, choices, and experiences. Character, like our actions, defines us. I choose to conduct myself with integrity and in ways that benefit others and myself, act with humility, and gratitude for all of my experiences and have a positive outlook on the future.…
My father always told me that nothing worth having comes easy. I carry these words close to my heart and they have driven me to challenge myself through life, especially in my STEM career. My major in the science field has been similar to riding a roller-coaster, but I have learned to overcome most of the obstacles I have faced along the way. No matter what situation brought me down, I remained positive and tried to think of solutions rather than giving up. Finally, in the last few months, many of my peers would mention that I am the type of person who is able to withstand obstacles and recover quickly.…
A crucial amount of changes enter one's life when stepping into a higher level institution. One has more independence and responsibility of one's own actions and decisions. In order to pay all the expenses, students get jobs. Consequently, time becomes an obstacle when one has to juggle course work as well as his or her job. A few strategies that help deal with this issue include forming a personal schedule and setting reminders, planning ahead and keeping journals, and exercise.…
In an academic focus, being a diligent and hardworking student is something that I excel at; I’m not afraid to make mistakes or ask questions, and I’m always eager to learn. When I’m able, I love taking charge and filling a leadership role, even passively, by being an exemplary role models for my peers. Throughout all my years of schooling, I’ve had a serious drive to excel and learn as much as I’m able.…
“You’ll never make it,” they all said, my boyfriend, family, teachers, and friends. It was like my life was already figured out for me, as if I didn’t have a say. The message was loud and clear. They all expected me to fail, to settle for a minimum wage paying job, to settle for just a high school diploma. For a while I went around believing that all I could do was the minimum required. But then I realized that I was capable of doing so much more. As time went on I realized that I did not have to live up to other’s low expectations and I started making a name for myself. I knew that studying a little harder for every test, joining clubs, volunteering, and running for leadership positions would later pay off.…
Unfortunately, my health began to deteriorate during my sophomore year so much so that I had to take many classes online second semester. Still, I was determined to keep moving forward despite my illness and hospital visits. I was going to do everything I could in order to get back to my normal, rigorous schedule and friends that I loved.…
With my first semester being in Montclair State University is coming to an end, these past few months and changed me in ways I would never expect. Going back to when I said that I had all these strengths and overcome my weaknesses before I entered college, has changed my perspective in academics and friends. I thought I was able to carry out all of my knowledge I learned in high school to college but I was amazed to succumb these challenges in just a few weeks.…
Throughout school, it seems to be all about what you wear, what friends you have, or what car you drive. Doesn't it seem so ironic that it's just a small bump you endure until you get where you are going. Where you find out who you are and what you dreamed of falls into place. Learners 111 and my OnCourse book have taught me so much I can hold onto for a lifetime. Through hands on experiences and so much more about personal stories others have wrote, I truly believe I've been pushed a little farther into knowledge I didn't know I had. By going into college it's seems like it's passed by in a blink and I'm already going to take on this new journey. By taking this class I’ve learned to adopt a creator mindset instead of a victim…

Throughout my high school career I have had to learn work-ethic. I was a very involved student and I had a hard time saying no to someone who needed my help. This caused me to become the “go-to” person for quite a few people. I loved it though, at one point my “normal” was completing not only my own work, but doing that while helping others with theirs, and on top of that juggling two sports and two jobs. The feeling of collapsing into bed after a successfully exhausting day was unbeatable. I am blessed with natural organizational skills that make multi-tasking possible. I am able to make a list in my head of all of the various tasks that I have to have done before the day is complete. Some days I am so frustrated I just wanted to pull my hair out, but I knew that if I focused, I could complete it all. I will never place limits my…
