Coast Guard Academy Application Essay
I believe the Coast Guard Academy will provide me with an excellent education, an opportunity to compete in collegiate athletics, and the ability to serve my country. The CGA’s excellent science program and low student-to-faculty ratio will enable me to excel as a mechanical engineering major. Studying at the CGA will not only give me classroom knowledge of mechanical engineering, it will also give me hands-on, real world experience and practice. Throughout my four years at the CGA, I will have many opportunities to take what I learned in the classroom and apply it to a variety of situations. During my time at the CGA, I will also be able to engage in humanitarian projects, spend my summers on the sea applying the skills learned during the school year, and participate in various clubs and athletic teams. While at CGA, I will not only expand my academic knowledge, but will also further develop my leadership …show more content…
Extracurriculars, especially athletics and volunteering, have a very special role in my life and were something that I did not want to forfeit. Although difficult, I have been able to continue to play three varsity sports, swim year round for a competitive club team, volunteer regularly, and participate in clubs at school. The only way I have been able to maintain such a schedule is with excellent time management skills and the support of my family. I take advantage of every opportunity I have to do homework and study, including during my commute to and from school and practice, during breaks between classes, and before practices. In order to avoid unnecessary stress, I must be diligent about completing my homework and projects. These skills will be valuable to me at the CGA, where I will be expected to balance a rigorous course load, athletics, and military

Furthermore, what initially interested me in the naval service was my family's involvement in the military. Ever since I was a child, I was inspired to become a military officer knowing my father was a non-commissioned officer in the Coast Guard and when my sister commissioned into the Navy as an officer becoming head of the physician and medical department on Naval bases. I was then driven to pursue a similar ambition to strive towards serving my country in the Navy as a lifelong career. On top of that, I plan to take early college classes. Being in AP classes is a true test of one’s perseverance and ability to discipline yourself of being punctual, managing time one’s wisely, and putting nothing but your best in all your work. My sophomore year, I joined AP Human Geography with Mrs. Koanui, and admittedly, I struggled with self-discipline in regards to time management. Thus, resulting in numerous counts of restless nights, along with several other factors concerning social and extracurricular activities, disrupted my focus in the class. Additionally, I turned in countless late works in the third and fourth terms, but taking part in such a rigorous class allowed for me to be a better, more focused, and industrious student in both my current regular and AP classes. Furthermore, I find myself with better time management skills and I currently am able to balance both my studies social interactions, having extra time even. I firmly believe that being a well-rounded student is a key role in success as both an individual and student. I attempt my best to partake in as many clubs as I can, and currently, involved in five other…

    • 8 Pages

When the Civil War broke out and men were needed to serve in the war, the government used conscription, the mandatory induction of men into the military.1 Though some people use this word just like the word draft, the two concepts are different. Draft is the process to determine who will be chosen to serve; it’s like a lottery. Currently, men ages 18-25 have to register with the Select Service with the possibility of serving in the military,2 but conscription itself was abolished in 1973.3…

    Military Draft Essay

    • 489 Words

The draft would be a good way to divide the burden of war so it doesn’t solely affect the people who really want to aid their country. When people feel like the draft is unconstitutional, the draft doesn’t deprive them rights, rather than giving them the right to “defend their country”.(Say Registration or Draft Not Needed 1979) Many people believe that war is bad, and I can agree, but being drafted doesn’t necessarily mean going immediately to war, you could be drafted in a time of no major conflicts and assist in a safe yet vital role in the military as a doctor, nurse or something as simple as a cook to be able to prepare food for hungry troops. For those that volunteer rather than being drafted, carry all the burden on their shoulders while…

Joining the future business leaders of America, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, becoming a youth leader at Christ Church, as well as many other volunteering activities helped me enrich my community, and make an impact in the world around me. Along with these organizations, I have played several sports in high school, in my junior and senior years I settled on my two favorite sports, track and field, and volleyball. Within these sports I have made friendships with my teammates I will never forget, and learned important lessons in humbleness when winning, and cohere with my friends when losing. By being a member of any sports teams at my high school, I regularly attended many of my school’s events, giving me the opportunity to develop relationships, and gain a tremendous sense of pride in my school. I am looking forward to bringing this same sense of pride to my college, and making many new friendships along the way. I learned over the course of my education to this point, that when I became more involved with these activities, my performance in the classroom increased alongside my…

Many students do extracurricular activities, and they devote a lot of time to these activities. However, as shown by both Alfie Kohn, a school principal, the current amount of homework assigned is enough so that the average student without extracurricular activities complain about being sleep deprived. Homework doesn’t leave any time for extracurricular activities. Kids who do extracurricular activities often devote more effort to those activities than homework. Of course, many adults will argue that if the kids can’t handle the work, they should quit the sport or class; school is more important. But this isn’t the case. The kids are right to take their sports more seriously than homework. In senior year of high school, when they apply for colleges, these activities will do more for them than a perfect track record with homework. Their special skills in sports will draw attention from recruiters after college. In the end, extracurricular activities will bring you farther than doing homework, but doing homework takes up the time needed for extracurricular…

High school students today deal with overloaded schedules, hours of homework, and heightened academic and extracurricular expectations. These demands leave students overstressed and with no time to themselves to relax or reflect. A typical day can find a student waking up at 6:30 to rush to school for a club meeting, followed by a typical school day, sports practice until 6:30, SAT prep class until 8:30, then home to eat dinner, shower, do homework, and finally fall into bed exhausted. High school students feel too much pressure to be overachievers and be involved in every extracurricular so that it will “look good” on their transcript. Trying to balance participation in extracurricular activities while preparing for SAT’s and college admissions decreases the time that students need to develop their own specific interests and mature. Thus, American high school students are less and less ready…

Although these facts came as a shock to me, they also piqued my interest. Because much of my growth can be attributed to the extracurricular activities I have invested myself in, I cannot imagine myself without the demanding cross country practices, or the baked goods I sell to raise funds for Relay for Life, or the Gwinnett Student Leadership Team seminars that my peers and I plan for our school. Although, at times, I become more stressed with the extra demands of my club activities, the fruitful results allow me to relax as my efforts become tangible. By running, baking and socializing, I was able to briefly escape the academic pressures put on me by…
