My first choice for the Areas of Concentration program is Bioethics. One major reason for this is because of my interest in the topic. This interested stemmed from an interest in ethics, which resulted in my decision to take an honors ethics course at my …show more content…
undergraduate institution.
Following the ethics course, I became more interested in specifically bioethics, which resulted in my own study of the field through reading articles and listening to TED talks on the subject. Lastly, I participated in the bioethics course at New York Medical College, which required us to both discuss topics and prepare discussions on certain topics. All of these previous experiences have been insightful, but I hope to grow more by concentrating in bioethics. Additionally, I believe that Bioethics will be a crucial tool once I am a practicing physician. While my foundation from the bioethics course will be helpful, I still feel there is more I can learn to prepare to be a practicing physician. Many situations I am prepared for, but there can be some gray situations that I currently won’t know what to do.
What if one of my patients is a bus driver, and he tells me every day before he drives the bus he has a few beers. Do I report my patient for potentially putting the lives of children in danger? Is the situation serious enough for me to break doctor-patient confidentiality? With further exploration of the field of bioethics, I will know what to do in these situations. Finally, I am thinking of taking a year off between my third and fourth year, and I may decide to pursue a Master’s in Bioethics. I hope that completing the concentration will assist me in completing my Master’s.
My second choice for the areas of concentration program is Patient Safety. My reason for choosing this program is simple: medical errors is the third leading cause of in the U.S. No physician wants to lose a patient to a medical error. I am fortunate enough to be at a point in my education where I can learn about the common medical errors, and look for them in the future, to ensure that the lives of my patients do not pass due to medical errors.
