Why Is Asoka An Enlightened Ruler
Asoka, a mystery to historians. Was he a ruthless conqueror or an enlightened ruler ? To me he is no mystery, he was a brutal dictator. His cruel reign over the Mauryan Empire that covered most of India started in 268 BCE and ended in 232 BCE, when he died. During his lifetime he took part in and did several barbaric actions. Only 7 years into his 36 years that he ruled, he attacked Kalinga. After a gruesome battle the Mauryan Empire came on top, but many died. About 200,000 Kalingans died from hunger and from fighting in the war. Also, 150,000 more Kalingans suffered because they didn’t have homes. So in all, 300,000 Kalingans died from this battle.
Another reason why Asoka wasn’t an enlightened ruler was because he was selfish. After he

Asoka was one of the greatest rulers of ancient India. He was the grandson of Chandragupta Maurya of Magadha who established the first Indian empire. Chandragupta reigned for twenty-four years before relinquishing his throne in favor of his son, Bundusara (Asoka's father), who left no noticeable mark upon the empire. My thesis would be that Asoka was an enlightened ruler and not a ruthless conqueror.…

Asoka was the ruler of the mauryan empire and ruled his empire for decades, until he died in 261 BCE. It is very much argued if Asoka is ruthless or enlightened, but in my perspective Asoka is an intelligent enlightened ruler. The fact that Asoka only did what is right for his empire, thought everyone who did wrong should be forgiven, and gave rich gifts to the poor clearly proves that he was an enlightened ruler. To start off, Asoka did not want to hurt anyone he just wanted a strong and satisfied empire. When Asoka fought the Kalingas he did not mean to harm anything or anyone he just wanted to boost his economy for his empire.…

Was Asoka a Ruthless Conqueror or Enlightened Ruler? Asoka, a serious prince of Mauryan Empire, had many different characteristics. After he conquered Kalinga, he was seeking Guru to find enlightenment. Asoka took leadership of the Mauryan Empire in 268 B.C. All those things show that he was an enlightened ruler. On the other hand he was defiantly not a ruthless conqueror because he went to seek Buddha, the Asokan edicts, and cared about the misfortunate.…

The emperor is selfish because he is arrogant. One way he shows he is arrogant is he practically worships clothes and only buys new clothes with his money. The text also says that, “He never drove in the woods or went to the theater or reviewed the troops in the army unless it was to show off some new costume,” which supports the idea even more that the emperor is arrogant. Finally, the emperor shows he is arrogant because he admires…
