Firstly I would like to thank the organizing committee of the school Entrepreneurship Day for giving me the oppurtunity to talk on this fine stage where once I came up to receive achievement badges, certificates and trophies during my primary school days.Walking up this stage was one of the biggest prideful moments to be cherished during the schooling days for every student. This Penang Freefall school was a place that I shared hundreds of moments growing up.Today my topic of speech here is about Why is Breakfast the most important meal of the day. Breakfast is the first meal taken after rising from a night’s sleep, most often eaten in the early morning before undertaking the day’s work.Breakfast foods vary from place to place but often include a carbohydrate such as grains or cereals, fiber such as fruit or vegetables, protein such as eggs, meat or fish and a beverage such as milk, tea or juice.

Learning is the key component when children attend to school, yet the food students are served at school does not give them the ability to do so. To learn, students must have a healthy diet and receive health-giving foods. According to an article by Sarah Mahoney, there are three main types of foods that best help the cognitions and learning abilities of children; including whole wheat sandwiches that help the memory cells of the brain, milk which helps give energy to the body, and fruits that help children feel refreshed and ready to learn throughout the day (Mahoney). If a child was offered these foods daily, it would not only benefit them in school but improve their well-being as well. Without these choices being offered daily, it leaves them choosing unhealthy meals that do not help their learning ability nor their health. Recent studies have demonstrated that nutrition affects students’ thinking skills and health, and suggests that diets high in trans or saturated fats can negatively impact learning and memory skills and can later on lead to negative effects on the cognitive development of school-aged children (Florence). Students losing the development of their learning ability due to lack of nutritious tend to participate in less activities and do less school…

“When children don’t get enough to eat, their health, their brain development-their very futures- are imperiled” (Lubrano). Hunger is a very serious obstacle to learning in children. Hunger makes it difficult for the children to concentrate. They often are concentrating more on going to lunch and being able to eat, than what is going on in the classroom. Test scores have also been shown to decrease in hungry children. Many of these students who are hungry tend to show behavioral problems and are often rowdy or disruptive. Hunger is also leading these children to miss class time because they need to go to the nurse for their stomach aches (Felling). These adverse effects have long term consequences as well. “Hunger affects long-term health, academic achievement, and economic prosperity – leading to a less competitive American workforce and higher national health care costs” (Felling). These adverse effects of hunger are greatly affecting the future of…

A new study suggests that as teens enter adulthood, they are more likely to skip meals, resulting in a very unconventional meal pattern. Breakfast is frequently neglected and omitted more often by teenagers as they enter high school as they see it as an unnecessary hassle. These diets are likely to be bizarre and unbalanced. Though appetite is great, meal times tend to be irregular due to pre-occupation with school, other social activities or even a part time job. Therefore snacking in between meals is common. Skipping breakfast, for example, can lead to greater levels of hunger later in the day, causing overeating, or the choosing of heavy foods that fill you up faster, but may lack nutritional values. For teenage girls, lunch is usually skipped as a way of controlling weight. As adolescents go through puberty, they are bound to feel more pressured by their peers about the shape and size of their body, sexual development, and their general appearance. Due to this…

The hectic university life for most undergraduates has been cited in many research works as the primary cause that hampers ones motivation to adopt a healthy eating lifestyle. Exposed to stress coupled with the need to race against time to meet the datelines of endless assignments, Rubina et al.(2009) were certain that these factors pose a barrier to the adoption of healthy eating behaviors. Many of the undergraduates would either skip their meals or opt for convenient food options, such as fast foods, that allow them to eat and work at the same time (Savige et al., 2007). It is not that university students do not know about the importance of healthy eating, but rather, they lack the nutrition knowledge to guide them in selecting nutritious food that their body requires (Gan et al., 2011). Consequently, their concept of eating revolves around consuming sufficient food to stave off their hunger regardless of the nutritional content in the food.…
