Let's say Stephen Curry is in the middle of a very intense basketball game.
The Golden State Warriors are neck and neck with the Carolina Bobcats, 23 to 23, fourth quarter with just seconds left. Curry gets the defensive rebound gaining possession, he sprints down the court. He spots his post, Draymond wide open, Curry fires the pass, Draymond shoots and scores. The crowd goes wild, with just seconds left The bobcats try to get down the court, all of a sudden, “BZZZZ.” The game is over, the score is no longer a tie, the Golden State Warriors won. The Carolina Bobcats could not catch up with only a second left, no matter how hard they could have
tried.
Many people agree that defense will keep a team in the game on bad shooting nights. Also that great defense leads to easy offense opportunities. An example of a great defense is if Stephen Curry gets a defensive rebound and takes off down the court, shoots the layup and scores. In this case it is called a fastbreak, and it is the easiest way to score. Steven Kerr, the coach of the GSW (Golden State Warriors), might be wondering right now, what leads to fast breaks? Well, that's an easy answer, defensive rebounds and turnovers. So it doesn’t matter if their is a pressing team that forces more turnovers or a pack-line style defense, that forces outside shots, which leads to rebounds. Playing great defense will lead to more offensive plays.
At most basketball games nobody chants offense, but there is the occasional defense chant. There is no wrong or right answer to the question: Is Defense Better Than Offense? Hey if you're a coach or a fan, you’re probably like, “Thanks for nothing,” but defense and offense are both very interesting, important topics.
