Hamlet gets a visit from the ghost of his father in the beginning of Act 1, scene 5. He is telling him that he wants him to get ready for revenge by murder. He says that his death was not really because of a snake. Claudius was the one who actually killed him, only for his crown. Hamlet is now contemplating killing his uncle or leaving it alone. If he kills Claudius and he goes to heaven he is not getting full revenge but, "hire and salary." This arises Hamlet to begin to think about what happens after death. He wants to kill himself but he does not know what will happen to him after death, he is afraid that he will go to hell. He asks himself if it nobler to suffer life, or to seek suicide to end his suffering. He compares death to sleep and thinks about the end of suffering, pain, and uncertainty it could bring. The thought of the afterlife, Hamlet says, leads to excessive moral sensitivity that makes suicide impossible. Hamlet did choose not to commit suicide because of this.
