HIPPA’s main goal is to protect and assure that the patient’s health information is protected. HIPPA protects the information even if it’s in the form of the media, electronic, paper or even oral. The facility has no right to release any of the patient’s information without the patients consent. When patients are seen in the facility, the providers and the medical assistants have the right to protect the patient's information from anyone that's not allowed or has no purpose to know the condition of the patients. When a patient comes in for an appointment, the medical assistant should always respect the privacy of the patients and should not share any medical information to another patient or any other medical assistant; if they do they are not respecting the privacy of the patient. patient to release their information to third parties. A patient expects to have his or her privacy respected by the physicians and the medical assistants and they should not disappoint their patients by releasing their information to a third party. If the information must be released, the patient should sign an appropriate release of disclosure in order for the information to be released. Any breach in confidentiality, even if it seems minor, can result in mistrust and possibly a lawsuit and/or disciplinary action or even revoking a physician’s medical license
All health care professionals should not provide any medical information about a patient that includes the patient’s diagnoses, treatment, or any other imprudent information about the patient.
When HIPPA is violated and any medical information about a patient is given without the patients consent, there are serious consequences that can result. The medical assistant can get fired from their job and there can be legal actions that can take place; especially when there is no release of liability that was signed by the patient. When questions are asked about a patient’s information by another person, the medical assistant should be considerate of the other patient’s medical information. Privacy is major rule in the health care industry, protecting the information of a patient from getting in the wrong hands of another. If a patient’s medical information gets out the reputation of the patient can get ruined. No one can be able to tell what will happen if the information gets in the hands of the wrong
person.
HIPPA is important in the medical field. Even if you don't think that you are violating HIPPA Laws, you probably are. It's wise not say anything to your family or any person such as your co-workers regarding another patient. It's important in protecting other people’s health care information. In think about it like if it was my own information I wouldn't want any other people to know my information unless it was my provider. The patients have the right to know to their diagnoses, the right to see their medical information and to check for errors and/or make corrections.
As a medical assistant I have learned how important it is to protect the information of my patients. I know that there are serious consequences for not following HIPPA laws. To ensure that you are following the correct protocol for HIPPA, make sure that if you are speaking about a patient and the patient is not around be careful about who is. Make sure all patient information (patients folder, lab results, etc.) is securely put away and not in view or reach of other patients. A patient has to be able to trust that their information will be secure, and you as a medical assistant can give them that extra security they need.
