People today typically do not have grit, as it is not ordinary for someone to choose an easy major because they are not determined to follow their passions. But people need to realize that if that is truly a passion in life, they will have enough grit to achieve their passion. The author, Angela Duckworth describes what grit is by giving an example in the novel “Grit” which one girl named, Chia had a strong passion for music ever since she was a little girl. Chia would practice the piano quite frequently even when her strenuous school schedule in college did not stop her. While her hard work during school earned her many degrees, her passion of playing music continued.…
The first time I experience grit was when I first went skiing for my first time at Sundown, which is a ski resort near Dubuque. At first I did not like skiing, because I would always fall, but I was determined to be a good skier. By my second time at Sundown I started to get the hang of it. By my third night I could go down all the hills in a controlled manner, then I started to really enjoy skiing. I then found out if I keep on working and try my hardest on something it will always pay off in the end. Grit made me take something I dislike, and made it into one of my favorite things to do in the winter. Today I have been skiing for over 3 years. Even after I hurt my back skiing 2 years ago, I still went back the next year.…
Jonah Lehrer’s article, “The Truth about Grit” introduces, and describes a mental trait called grit. The author begins this article by comparing his work on grit with Isaac Newton’s theory on gravity. The mental trait, grit, like Newton’s theory was not a new idea, but rather put a name and study of the term. Using Newton’s long determination on one specific goal was also an enhanced way to proving Lehrer’s theory on grit. Lehrer later describes the term as, “setting a specific long-term goal and doing whatever it takes until the goal has been reached.” To better simplify it, people with girt can endure more challenges and, obstacles to meet their goal rather than people without girt. Many researchers and scientist agree…
The quote, “The moment we believe that success is determined by an ingrained level of ability we will be brittle in the face of adversity,” by Josh Waitzkin expresses how if people believe that success is based on capability when they face a problem, they’ll tend to give up and fail. Growth mindset is when people believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work. Grit is perseverance and passion for long-term goals. Grit and growth mindset has been proven to help one achieve in academics, personal life, and career.…
This article also talks about the idea that people that have built grit will be successful in whatever they chose to do. Sometimes we like to do a lot of things at the same time thinking we are achieving what we want. The truth is that we won’t know if we could give more to what we are doing because we are not focusing on finishing one thing first. An example will be that sometimes we get a lot of classes to finish fast and we don’t pay the attention that is…

Working to your full potential to receive the best outcome is one of the traits of Grit Angela Duckworth conducted. The study was conducted on students in the classroom and a cab driver, and is a trait that my mother and I share. My mother was a teacher for thirteen years and always worked hard for her students to become the best they could be. All of my mother’s…
According to the study of Bazelais, Lemay & Doleck, (2016) showed Grit-quality trait perseverance is better than having a high grades and IQ, responsible for explaining differences in the high achieving ranks and of the individual performances. A two-way analysis was used to predict variation in grit based on their education and age, while dealing with…
Thinking and listening almost go hand in hand. Without being able to listen properly, you won’t know the full details of the lecture, or the criteria that is being taught that day. Patrick Sullivan also states in a short sentence that,” Listening” is also one of the key foundations for a good healthy relationship between friends, or, a significant other. “Grit” is the last topic that Patrick Sullivan covers in this letter. “Grit” is a term that you don’t think fits to anything. But it is simple, “grit” is a term associated with sheer perseverance and dedication. With these kind of attributes, college will seem as if it is easy. Just having the self discipline to get your homework done, study for tests, and doing the proper research, will ensure that you will do fine in an…
Some people have a personality trait called “grit” . Angela Duckworth defines grit as the determination to do something until you have obtained the skills to do it correctly . In her research she explains that one must have endurance to complete a race . In True Grit by Angela Lee Duckworth and Lauren Eskreis -winkler , the example they give of true grit is , “ At the starting line it is the hare who is expected to finish first . Sure enough , the hare quickly out spaces the tortoise , accumulating so great a lead that he lies down to take a nap mid -race. When the hare awakens , The tortoise , who all the while has been laboring towards his destination , is too close to the finish line to beat” ( paragraph 2) . This shows grit because the tortoise himself , and everyone watching thought he had no chance of winning , but he had the determination to finish the race and he won .…
A growth mindset and grit connect to each other in some sort of way. A person with a growth mindset can take up a challenge and not complain about it. The person wants to learn and overcome obstacles when faced with them. A growth mindset allows the person to think of the future and not just the moment. On the other hand, there is a fixed mindset. A fixed mindset isn’t a terrible thing, but it does set you back. A person with a fixed mindset will not take up challenges or face obstacles, they think about only now. Grit is similar to a growth mindset because it shows perseverance. Grit is how hard you can work and how long you can work this hard. Grit is the long-term goals that a person can set and still achieve. Gritty people focus on the future, just like growth mindset people. Both grit and a growth mindset aren’t based on talent, IQ or intelligence, its based on your work ethic.…
People born with natural talent hardly ever face challenges regarding the category they are proficient in. Imagine an academically gifted child, who decides to learn how to play the cello. This child quickly becomes frustrated with the advanced techniques and skills they are required to learn but cannot grasp, and quits altogether. Nothing was learned from this failure, the child did not retain any information they were taught regarding the cello. In the first paragraph of “Adversity: An Opportunity to Choose Growth” a nonfiction article by Camille Preston, Ph.D, PCC, it asks the rhetorical question:”What will [someone] do to turn adversity into a learning opportunity?” Few people turn mistakes into opportunities to grow as a person. Instead, they turn from one thing to the next, giving up every time they fail. Isn’t it best for people to stick to what they’re good at, in order to avoid getting hurt? Of course, some people claim to be “untalented”, but everyone enjoys doing something important to them - perfect at it or not. Being content with life is the end goal, and if someone has failed often enough to be dissatisfied with their life, it was not a happy life they lived. To quote Thomas Edison: “Many of life’s failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.” Obviously, if someone does not succeed, they…
