During an interview on Oprah in 1993, Michael Jackson explained to the viewers that he was suffering from vitiligo, which is a rare skin disease where the skin loses its pigmentation. Soon after the interview, allegations of Michael Jackson sexually abusing a thirteen year old boy were made. It was not settled in court since he paid the accuser twenty million dollars. However, the second time he was accused, which was years later, he went to criminal court (Fast, 262). The first allegations he received are referenced throughout the song “They Don’t Care About Us.” The song was one of the singles from his album HIStory: Past, Present and Future, the first album released after the 1993 molestation allegation (Rossiter, 203). The song portrays how the African American community, and other minority groups, are mistreated by the media, police force and the justice system.
