In today’s society there have been some controversy regarding school times, most of which comes from students. There have been complaints regarding the early time school starts and wanting Westmount to start at a later time. This would be a good idea as students needing more time to sleep will have the chance to do so (especially if they studied all night). However if school starts at a later time then it will also end at a later time which causes various problems. These problems would affect students academically, socially, and emotionally. These problems wouldn’t only affect students but it would negatively impact those around them as well. The first reason why a later school time at Westmount is a bad idea is due to the stress it will cause the students. Say school starts at 10:15 and ends at 5:15. That leaves only a few hours to complete homework and/or assignments from that day. There is bound to be homework left over which pile up and cause problems for the student. Keeping in mind Westmount’s self-pace program makes it possible to continue a subject after a full semester; some students may have to do so unwillingly. Secondly, there is the issue of students with extra-curricular activities in the afternoon. If students add the hours of the extra-curriculars to the already limited hours of homework students will have; it becomes a larger problem than initially thought. The student’s grades would suffer causing the student to have to drop out of the extra-curricular. Lastly, there is the problem with students not being able to achieve high grades. Studies have shown that the best time to learn is early in the morning rather than later in the day. If students were to wake up at a later time then they would not be guaranteed their previous average. The second reason why starting school at a later time is a bad idea is how much time the student will have to interact with their friends and family. Considering how little time the students will
