Have you ever thought about what you are consuming in a day? Some students are forced to eat school lunches and must consume what they offer. These lunches are meant to keep students eating healthy, and to persuade them to make good eating choices. School lunches should contain locally grown produce to provide students with needed nutrients, safe foods, and to help the local economy.
Many students at our school struggle financially; therefore, they must sign up for free lunches at school. The food they receive should be quality food because their home lives may not allow for quality produce. When we buy produce locally, we are at less of a risk of the food being unsafe. “The more steps there are between you and your food’s source the more chances there are for contamination. Food grown in distant locations has the potential for food safety issues at harvesting, washing, shipping and distribution” (Klavinski, ‘7 Benefits of Eating Local Foods’). Since we live in a farming community, the produce has a little distance to go before we eat it. Furthermore, there are other reasons that are not health related that prove we should purchase locally grown produce.
Locally grown produce benefits not only the students, but also the local farmers. “Local retailers return a total of 52 percent of their revenue to the local economy, whereas national chains only return 14 percent” (Bamforth, ‘Buying Local Explained: Experts Weigh In On The Pros and Cons’).
