The United States was not concerned about defeating the Japanese. It was expressed that without the bombing the Japanese were going to become undone. “Atomic bomb or not atomic bomb, the Japanese were already on the verge of collapse” (Doc B). Saying that it was not necessary to drop the bombs because the Japanese empire was going to collapse anyway shows that the atomic bombs were just used as a way to showcase the power that the United States had. The United States was more interested with the Soviet Union’s involvement in the war. Japan had a large army and they were not afraid to flaunt it. “I was informed that such operations might be expected to cost over a million casualties, to American forces alone” (Doc A). The U.S. already had a plan to defeat Japan which was to use the atomic bombs “without reliance upon the atomic bomb, which had not yet been tested in Mexico” (Doc A). The U.S. knew that the atomic bomb was not tested. However, since they felt threatened by the vast amount of Japanese soldiers they used the bomb without hesitation to end the war
