On April 7, 1865 Grant sent a letter to Lee that says “The result of last week must convince you of the hopelessness of further resistance.”At first Lee didn’t let up, but then Grant stole food from Lee’s train. Lee couldn’t feed his starving soldiers. Grant then met Lee in a small town called Appomattox. In the courthouse of Appomattox, Grant did something amazing there, he sent all of the soldiers home with their lives and their horses’ lives. Grant was a commander in the Battle of Shiloh. What happened in Shiloh is that the Confederates attacked Grant’s soldiers and so they retreated into the woods. Grant could have lost him being the leader, but then he turned around and fought back and even though he lost a lot of men his army still won. Before West Point Grant’s name was Hiram Ulysses Grant, but then they made a mistake and his name turned into the name we know now, Ulysses S. Grant. Grant wanted to leave but since his named was screwed up he couldn’t leave. So they forced him to go to the Mexican-american war. Grant got married to Julia Grant in August 22, 1848. Him and his wife has four kids. Frederick Dent Grant, Jesse Root Grant, Ulysses S.Grant Jr, and Nellie Grant. He had his family to take care of and yet he still is the general. His family then went into the war, but his daughter who is a writer and is his only daughter, Jesse turned into a politician and was the youngest of his family.
Grant was born on April 27, 1822. Grant was raised in Georgia, Ohio and he was raised on a farm. He was a very shy boy and he was said to be more with the animals than humans. His mom was just like him, she was shy and was in touch with animals. His dad on the other hand was not like him, he was mean and wanted stuff to get done no matter what. Even though Grant is a great soldier he never wanted to be
