Why Benjamin Harrison Was a Good President Benjamin Harrison was the United State’s 23rd President. He did many things that were memorable, such as annexing Hawaii. Harrison was born in Ohio during the year 1833. He went to Farmer’s College, where he would meet his future wife, Catherine Scott. Harrison was a Republican who believed in African American rights. Harrison may have made a few mistakes, but he was overall a good President because of his work on the Sherman Silver Purchase Act, the Federal Elections Bill, and he dealt with the concerns of the disease, trichinosis. The Sherman Silver Purchase Act was one of the main reasons that made Harrison’s Presidency memorable. It basically said that the amount of silver the Government purchased
every month would be increased. The Government was now buying an extra 4.5 million ounces of silver every month. The act helped to boost the economy and lessen deflation. Farmers were extremely pleased with this, because their crops were becoming less and less expensive every day. Approving this act was an example of the presidential role, chief executive. During his Presidency, Benjamin Harrison also tried to pass the Federal Elections Bill. He tried to get this to pass in the year 1890.This bill would have protected African American’s rights. He also ordered charges against the Southern states for not properly honoring their voting rights. He urged Congress to pass all kinds of legislation to try to get rights for the African Americans in the country. This would be an example of Harrison being a chief legislator. Benjamin Harrison also helped deal with and lift the ban on importing to the US. This ban was in place because of a disease called trichinosis. Mostly meat was affected by the disease, but all import to the country was banned. Harrison was able to “engage” the ministers to France and Germany and talk them into lifting the ban. Other countries soon followed in suit. In this case, Harrison was playing the role of chief diplomat.
