This engineering report details the experiences I have gained over the course of my work placement at ASPEC Engineering over the 2010/2011 summer period. ASPEC Engineering is a consultancy company specialising in mining and ports infrastructure design, operating through three divisions: Engineering Projects, Structural Integrity and Materials Handling Machines. My position was as a Junior Structural Engineer with the then Cranes and Materials Handling Machines sector.
In this position, I undertook a variety of tasks, reporting to a Senior Structural Engineer in my sector. The two main tasks I was requested to complete was finishing a program in Visual Basic (VBA) to convert a SpaceGass model to Strand7 and creating an automated wave force calculator in Microsoft Excel. Each of these tasks dealt with topics and skills I had never previously encountered.
In addition to my reflections on my experience with ASPEC Engineering, this report identifies the work environment conditions of the company. The policies and procedures regarding insurances, occupational health and safety, intellectual property, quality assurance and codes of practice are discussed throughout this report. All aspects of operation within ASPEC Engineering are according to industry standards.
Since my employment with ASPEC Engineering, I have become an Undergraduate Structural Engineer for Sinclair Knight Merz (SKM) in the Mining and Metals group. Organisational details of SKM are included as an attachment to this report. Activities undertaken at SKM to this date will be included in Report 2: Work Activities and Reflections.
My work placements with ASPEC Engineering and Sinclair Knight Merz have been very beneficial, providing me with valuable insight into the engineering industry, particularly in the mining sector. The lessons I have learnt will assist my university studies, as well as my career as a structural
