Executive Summary
This engineering report details the experiences I have gained over the course of my work placement at ASPEC Engineering over the 2010/2011 summer period. ASPEC Engineering is a consultancy company specialising in mining and ports infrastructure design, operating through three divisions: Engineering Projects, Structural Integrity and Materials Handling Machines. My position was as a Junior Structural Engineer with the then Cranes and Materials Handling Machines sector.
In this position, I undertook a variety of tasks, reporting to a Senior Structural Engineer in my sector. The two main tasks I was requested to complete was finishing a program in Visual Basic (VBA) to convert a SpaceGass model to Strand7 and creating an automated wave force calculator in Microsoft Excel. Each of these tasks dealt with topics and skills I had never previously encountered.
In addition to my reflections on my experience with ASPEC Engineering, this report identifies the work environment conditions of the company. The policies and procedures regarding insurances, occupational health and safety, intellectual property, quality assurance and codes of practice are discussed throughout this report. All aspects of operation within ASPEC Engineering are according to industry standards.
Since my employment with ASPEC Engineering, I have become an Undergraduate Structural Engineer for Sinclair Knight Merz (SKM) in the Mining and Metals group. Organisational details of SKM are included as an attachment to this report. Activities undertaken at SKM to this date will be included in Report 2: Work Activities and Reflections.
My work placements with ASPEC Engineering and Sinclair Knight Merz have been very beneficial, providing me with valuable insight into the engineering industry, particularly in the mining sector. The lessons I have learnt will assist my university studies, as well as my career as a structural

Transcription: process of creating an equivalent RNA copy of a sequence of DNA Transcription is the first step leading to gene expression. The stretch of DNA transcribed into an RNA molecule is called a transcription unit and encodes at least one gene. Occurs in nucleus of the cell Translation: Translation is the production of proteins by decoding mRNA produced in transcription. Translation occurs in the cytoplasm where the ribosomes are located. In translation, messenger RNA (mRNA) is decoded to produce a specific polypeptideaccording to the rules specified by the genetic code. This uses an mRNA sequence as a template to guide the synthesis of a chain of amino acids that form a protein. 2. Which of the kingdoms of organisms are characterized by unicellularity (the organism has only one single cell)? Protista 3. Bacteria and archaea are both prokaryotes, but they have very different characteristics. How would you compare archaea and bacteria? Archaea cell membrane contains ether linkages cell wall lacks peptidoglycan genes and enzymes behave more like Eukaryotes have three RNA polymerases like eukaryotes extremophiles 4. What process can lead to shrinkage or swelling of a cell? Osmosis 5. What are the different kinds of fibers that make up cytoskeleton? Cells contain elaborate arrays of protein fibers that serve such functions as: Bacteria cell membrane contains ester bonds cell wall made of peptidoglycan have only one RNA polymerase react to antibiotics in a different way than archea do…

Although I had a lot of major projects, I also assisted with smaller tasks. Some of these tasks needed to be completed prior to my other projects. For instance, the new HRIS HealthStream was launched on June 8th 2016. After my training, I helped label and stuff envelopes which contained usernames and passwords for all employees to access their HealthStream account. Afterwards, they had to be placed alphabetically and separated into their departments. The paperwork and mailing essentials arrived less than a week before the launch. This meant the whole HR department, including myself, was responsible for getting all of the employees their paperwork before the launch. This minor task was so important that I even volunteered to come in during my…

There is no one type of government that is way better than the others. In a unitary government the entire country is controlled as one and the government has all the power. In a confederate government the individual states have a lot of independence and there is a weaker and limited central government.
