With the honor, came responsibility and independence. We’d all been there for a reason, so when a new piece of music came around, our director didn’t spend much time practicing it in class, because we were expected to practice at home. As well, we were required to try out for all-city honors band. I did try out, but I never made it. My last year of band, my junior year, we got accepted into going to all-state band. I’d never done this before, so it was a whole new experience. We had been working on a bookmark piece for the entire year now, ready to perform it for competition. It was titled “Bookmarks from Japan”, and is still one of my favorite pieces I’ve heard to date. We preformed in front of four judges, and then listened to other bands. Once the awards rolled around, surprise filled the room. Our band had taken second place overall. In the ENTIRE state! I’ve never felt more recognition for hard work than I have in my life. Being in Wind Ensemble has taught me a lot of things. I’ve learnt how to be more independent, to try harder and excel at things, and that with hard work, great rewards can follow. Though it may get tough, just like anything else, pushing through and doing your best will strengthen anyone up. I am honored to be a part of the Wind Ensemble at Sprague High
