Winston Churchill

Winston Churchill Sir Winston Leonard Spencer–Churchill was born into an aristocratic family on November 30, 1874, at Blenheim Palace, in Woodstock, England. Winston’s ancestors were both British and American, his father, Lord Randolph Churchill, was a British statesman. His mother was Jeannie Jerome, a New York socialite. As a child Churchill proved to be a rebellious student so to better his education he was sent to Harrow School, a boarding school in London. There Winston joined the Harrow Rifle Corps thus sent him towards a military career. A new found interest in writing brought Winston to leaving the army and becoming a war correspondent for a daily conservative newspaper, The Morning Post. In 1908, Winston became a Member of Parliament of the Liberty Party and appointed as Prime Minister. After the United States entered World War II, Churchill worked closely with U.S. President Roosevelt and Soviet Union leader Joseph Stalin, to coordinate allied military strategies against the Axis Powers. In March 1946, while on a visit to the United States, Churchill made his famous "Iron Curtain" speech, warning of Soviet domination in Eastern Europe and advocating that Britain maintain its independence. Churchill suffered a severe stroke that left him gravely ill. He died nine days later, at age 90, on January 24, 1965. The reason we chose him to be a guest at our dinner party was because of his importance during and after World War II. His speeches during the time period of 1945-1950 helped to warn our nation of an ally, the Soviet Union. He worked with the president and many foreign leaders, like Joseph Stalin of the Soviet Union, to try to formulate military actions and agreements between and against the Axis Powers.
