“St. Lucy’s Home for Girls Raised by Wolves” by Karen Russell is a short story about a “pack” of girls raised by werewolves that are severely lycanthropic. Their parents send them to a home called St. Lucy’s run by Jesuit nuns that’s goal is to eradicate all traces of wolf culture and behavior from the girls, and assimilate them into human culture. To help them, the nuns have a handbook called “The Jesuit Handbook on Lycanthropic Culture Shock”. The handbook divides each part of the “packs” development into human culture into 5 stages. The main character, Claudette, develops a lot throughout each of the 5 stages, but still has some struggles. By the end of the story, Claudette is very close to fully adapting, but still has some wolf like tendencies.…

I would describe the character of John J. Dunbar as an extraordinarily committed man. John Dunbar was committed to staying at Fort Sedgwick although all of the other soldiers had abandoned the Fort in hopes of finding a better life. I would also consider John Dunbar a very committed man because when he invests himself into a relationship, he carries out all that he can to make that relationship flourish. He showed that commitment through his numerous relationships with Stands with a Fist, Cisco, Two Socks, and Kicking Bird. John J. Dunbar can also be described as a receptive individual because of the way he communicated with the Sioux Indians. When he first met the Sioux Indians he was very persistent on initiating their communication.…

The Little Foxes is set in the deep south, in the spring of 1900. This setting is historically at the cusp of what is referred to as the Gilded Age. The “Gilded Age” is considered to be the decades between 1870 and 1900 and is a term coined by Mark Twain. It was used to describe a period with many social problems that were masked by the rise of new money. Greed, scandal, and corrupt policies ran rampant during this time; however, as we look back, this was also a point in history where we grew economically and began to rise industrially.…

In Karen Russell’s short story, St. Lucy’s Home for Girls Raised by Wolves, she shows what being civilized is by presenting Claudette’s progression throughout the story. Before Claudette’s exposure to St. Lucy she felt free to express herself in any shape or form, but she soon changed into a person who was confined to the way she acted and talked. She was wild and exuberant, and she didn’t care how she looked. In spite of this, she was forced to conform, turning her into someone who had to look after her appearance, and she had to speak and act with a filter.…

I Know Im A Wolf Analysis

I Know I’m a Wolf, by Young Heretics introduces it with a soothing, yet eerie melody. Being a darker, more complex change to today’s more overplayed, shallow, pop; the lyrics in this song stand as a metaphor in itself, and even though they are repeated, the meaning changes each time the chorus is sung. The song starts in an almost lullaby-esque manner, with a chilling undertone. Accompanied by a flowing piano line that dances, dives, twists, and leaps as the song progresses, the singer harmonizes in a melancholic, alluring way. If one where to be inattentive to the deeper meaning, they would probably assume it was simply about a hunting wolf. But hidden within the few stanzas that comprise the melody, the lyrics speak of a secret. They represent…

In the novel The Darkest Child the author Delores Phillips displays the activities and likely hood of growing up in the still racist Deep South. Rozelle often beat and called her children names out of frustration and rage. The mouse in this scene is the “beast” mentioned in the MM while the “imperfection” is the fact that, even though the child looks like a mouse, they are still, in fact, children. Who can, as evidenced by the protagonist doing so in the latter part of the book, speak English and communicate perfectly with his grandmother. This passage only aids to further the idea that Dahl’s work was not purely misogynistic because of the line “only women are witches”, but that it was, in fact, based around historically misogynistic texts, like the Malleus Maleficarum, in addition to classic fairy-tale traits.…
