In Wonder by R.J. Palacio the main character Auggie faces many challenges when his parents decide that he should go to public school. When Auggie’s parents sent him to school, they made the right decision. For instance, when Auggie receives the award at the ceremony. “I’m very proud to award the Henry Ward Beecher medal to the student whose quiet strength has carried up the most hearts.” “So will August Pullman please come up here to receive this award?” This quote shows that Auggie going to school helped him because he not only helps himself but the people around him. He teaches them indirectly that you should always be nice to someone. Another example is how everyone reacts with Auggie at the reception. “All I knew for sure is that we were
all laughing and squeezing in tight and no one seemed to care if my face was next to theirs. It felt as if everyone wanted to get close to me.” If Auggie's parents had decided to go back on their decision to send him to school, then he wouldn’t have been as comfortable as he is about taking pictures right then.
For example, when Auggie goes on the annual fifth grade trip Amos’s and Miles protect him. “Now that they had protected me … it was like I was one of them.” This shows that before very few people would have stood up for Auggie. This was a big deal because since he came to school. Yet, now that he goes to school people started to protect him. He finally felt as if he had people who would stand up for him besides his family. He had learned that he could trust people. Though some may argue, that middle school may have been a hard time with the bullies from the retreat and with Julian and his group of friends. Plus the plague, the cheese touch, and all the odd stares he got. However, while yes it may have been a hard time he also gains some great friends like Summer, Jack, and Charlotte. Also, later on in the story Amos and Miles plus tons of other students became friends with Auggie. So while there were some rough patches he had just as many good thing that came out of attending Beecher Prep.
In Wonder the main Character Auggie faces many challenges and overcame them when his parents decided he should go to public school. So with all the challenges he faces from being bullied, to the good things like gaining friends, and winning an award. It still stands true that his parents made the right decision to send him to school.
