Work and Private Life
Work and Private Life

Introduction

In this essay I will be talking about work and private life. There have been significant changes to work and private life between 1990’s and 2010. This could be due to many factors such as technology, changes in law, improved way of working (Productivity and training) and intense competition.

Main body

Work and private life in modern times clashes in more ways than before. For example, one does not have enough time to concentrate on private life as much as work. New technologies such as Smartphone’s (Windows Phone, Blackberries, Android, Symbian Phones, Bada, and Iphones etc), laptops and other communication devices have made it easy for employers to be in contact with employees more ways than ever before.

The availability of this technology interferes more with private life and it gives work more priority over private life.

In the 80’s, Once an employee had finished their shift in the office or store, they had total freedom and time for their private life as there was very rare disturbances from work due to lack of technology.

In recent years, technology have made it possible for employers to contact employees and find out about certain tasks that employees have to complete in short amount of time, this creates a disturbances to an employee’s private life.

In my own experience working as Store Manager in Superdrug between 2005 and 2008, my blackberry phone supplied by head office had made it easy to be in contact with other managers and colleagues, in the meantime it was a headache because holding a blackberry meant I had to answer every single email, calls and other communications no matter what time of the day or night. It became harder and harder when I got married and later started having kids. This had put so much pressure on my private life that I just had to change my job and go to a different organisation. It was not like old days that once one had left the office they had nothing to do with

If you own a business, wouldn’t an instant way to contact your superior be useful? Not only do many businesses rely on this means of communication, but many could start to benefit from it. Taking this means of contact will hinder many businesses that rely on modern technology. For example, a small business owned by one person. A cell phone allows that person to manage their whole business from one device. Banning that device will handicap the owner and reduce his or her business to nothing. Furthermore, a ban on cell phones in all privately owned businesses will decrease employee morale. Most people working in privately owned businesses are younger people, who rely on their phones. Banning all cellular devices will lower the morale of the employees working in a privately owned business. A ban on cell phones will do more harm than good for…

There is much debate over what employers should and should not be able to do when it comes to monitoring the communications of individuals under their employment. There are those who feel that the rights of the individual are not limited to protection from the Government and employers have limited rights in regards to employee communication. There those that feel that the employer should have very little to no restraint in monitoring those under their employment. Going too far in either the employers or employee position can create an unproductive and unrealistic standard for a working environment. Employers must be able to create and maintain both a productive and safe working environment from their employees. However this does not mean employees should be subject to unreasonable and intrusive monitoring practices by their employer. Communication privacy laws and workplace policies should be carefully crafted to provided balanced protection both the interest of employer and employee.…

New technology is being introduced daily into the business world. In past employers I have seen several different communication trends used to express issues within the company. Some of my past employers have used personal digital assistants (PDAs), e-mail and text messaging, job flexibility, and team work (Locker & Kienzler, 2008). PDAs were an excellent way to let a person work from home if it is needed or they can be used for someone that is not in the office every day. E-mails became useful when the company had grown to larger numbers and were used as a way to order…

In this article, the author speaks about how smartphones are becoming an essential communication tool for people to connect to their coworkers, bosses and overall work environment. It is predicted that by 2014, there will be more mobile users than Internet users. The people are quickly transitioning their lifestyle to use a more convenient phone that allows them to engage with their work while running their own personal errands such as taking care of their children. “Statistics indicate that 48 percent of users apply their smartphones to aid in their work.” Although this may make lives easier, the author questions its effectiveness. Are smartphones positively influencing employees and their work progress or slowing them down? This is the problem that the authors study within this article.…

As technology is always on a growing fast track, it is hard for employers and employees to stray away from the dependency of cell phones. Then the author tries to explain the situation of convenience and real results and not their visibility. Managers, says Mr Becker, will also have to abandon their long-cherished notion that a productive employee is an employee who can be seen. Appearing on time and looking busy will soon become irrelevant. Technology and new patterns of office use will make companies judge people by what they do, not by where they spend their time. Nowadays there are a variety of devices, software, social networks for the implementation of negotiation between employees and directors such Skype and so on.…

Many people think that personal life and professional life is one and the same, both work are two ways of road and hence should be carried on simultaneously. While some people think that personal life and professional life should never be combined as both are the two sides of a single coin. I agree with the latter statement and refute the former one. I agree with the author’s statement that employees should keep their private lives and personal activities as separate as possible from the workplace.…
