Soccer, or also known as Fùtbol in European countries, can be considered one of the most popular sports in the world. This can be shown by the attendance and the draw of its most esteemed title, the world cup, in which 32 nations qualify and many others fail to do so. The world cup, and many other professional soccer leagues and tournaments, are overseen and regulated by the FIFA, Fédération Internationale de Football Association. In recent years, the FIFA association has come under fire for scandals involving bribery, solicitation, and laundering of money in exchange for various benefits including world cup bids, private television contracts, and rigged elections causing distrust in the validity and damaging the sport of soccer as a whole. Russia is experiencing large problems due to the drop in oil prices, in which many of its cities are dependent on. The nations national currency, the ruble, has dropped in over half of its value which has caused widespread poverty and food prices soaring (Bremmer). If the world cup would go to Russa, it would boost the countries morale and independence along with increasing revenue from tourism to the country. Also, the World Cup would aid in a distraction allowing the government to attempt to repair the major problems within the country without the public opinion. Like Russia, Qatar also needed the world cup to come to its country.
