On June 22, 1940 Britain was now only the country standing against the Germans after the surrender of France. Still British Prime Minister Winston Churchill would not consider defeat and raised the unity of his country in a speech over the radio where he stated that the British people would defend their island no matter the cost. Britain still had all the resources of its enormous empire. Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, India, Egypt, and a series of other nations from Britain's colonies and commonwealth all declared war on Germany, but they were thousands of miles away across the oceans and their military power would be difficult to bring to support the mother country. Adolf Hitler, the German dictator, believed that Britain would quickly accept any peace terms.
Hitler entered the the German parliament (the Reichstag) and made a peace treaty to give to Britain. His offer was for Britain to keep its entire empire and virtually walk free so he could have a free hand in conquering the Soviet Union because the nation was communist, full of Jewish people, would no doubt give more room to live for the German people, and supply them with a vast amount of resources. Churchill however, denied the peace treaty and would stand for democracy in Europe to try to retake the conquered nations of Poland, Norway, Austria, Czechoslovakia, France, Luxembourg, Belgium, and the Netherlands. Fearing that the Germans may take over French warships; Churchill ordered the British Royal Navy to attack and destroy the French warships unless their crews joined with Britain.
Still it would be difficult for Britain to take the fight to Germany and actually win the war. The British Army may have survived by escaping at Dunkirk when it tried to help the French, but they had lost most of their heavy equipment, tanks, and artillery. Just 25 divisions in Britain, mostly armed with rifles, stood against the German war machine. The British Army
