After the end of World War I, the previous international system was thrown away, and Europe was reorganized. The European nations that had fought in the Great War emerged economically and socially crippled. Economic depression reigned in Europe for the majority of the inter-war period. Germany especially was destroyed economically by World War I and its aftermath. The reparations to Britain and France forced on Germany by the Treaty of Versailles were impossibly high. During this time the League of Nations was formed in an effort to break the pattern of traditional power politics, and bring international relations into an open and cooperative forum in the name of peace and stability. However, the League never grew strong enough to make a significant impact on politics. Nazi Germany then broke their treaty in 1918. The Soviet Union and Italy began to rise as international powers. WWII started when Germany invaded Poland on September 1st 1929 and Britain and France responded by declaring war on Germany. There were also two sides in this war. One named the Axis Powers which was made up of Germany, Italy, and Japan. The other called the Allies which consisted of Britain, France, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, India, Soviet Union, China, and the USA. The Allies were lead by Franklin D. Roosevelt, Winston Churchill, and Joseph Stalin. The Leaders of the Axis Powers were primarily Adolf Hitler, Emperor Hirohito, and Benito Mussolini. World War II was the most destructive conflict in history. It cost more money, damaged more property, killed more people, and caused more far-reaching changes than any other war in history. Official numbers can never be confirmed, but it’s estimated over 50-70 million people died due to the conflicts. Of the most important conflicts, there is Operation Torch. Operation Torch was the British-United States invasion of French North Africa. The battle lasted from November 8th, 1942, to November 10th, 1942. Operation Torch was the first time the British and Americans had jointly worked on an invasion plan together. The Allies won. Another very influential battle during WWII was Pearl Harbor.
