During slavery the Portuguese attempted to get rid of Islam in their country. The Portuguese used deportation and forceful baptism to get the job done. When entering Africa the Portuguese killed Islamic Natives from the area. After doing this they put up crosses in different locations and in mosques. Then they began to capture those left behind that were unable to fight. They wanted to take the unexpected humans and planned to hold them in captivity. After capturing these humans the Portuguese wanted to bring them to Europe to sell them. Out of some 20 million Africans that were enslaved 20-30% of them were Muslim. One of those enslaved Muslims was Yarrow Mamout.
Yarrow Mamout was born in 1736. He was purchased in Montgomery County, Maryland. There, he was purchased by Colonel Samuel Beall, Jr. Samuel Beall dies shortly after purchasing Mamout and therefore left him to be watched over by his son, Brooke Beall. In 1783 Beall moved his family and slaves from Montgomery County to Georgetown located in Washington D.C. While in Georgetown Mamout was hired as a brick maker. Beall later died on July 11, 1795 giving Mamout to his wife Margaret Johns Beall. It is said that before he passed away the younger Beall promised Mamout that he would be granted manumission.( Manumission is complete emancipation from slavery or being Enslaved) So Mamout worked and worked making bricks for the home until he was finished. Mamout was reportedly manumitted by the wife of Brooke Beall. Sources say she did this to keep the word of her now diseased husband. The official date of Mamout’s manumission was August 22, 1796. Mamout had a son who was seven at the time was manumitted also but wasn’t allowed to be released into freedom until he could earn a living for himself or unless Mamout took him under his care. After
