When each club is hit it will reach distances in increments of 10. A 9 iron will travel 130 yards, 8 iron 140 yards, 7 iron 150 yards and so on. The golfer must also understand the concept of trajectory, a lower distance club will be hit higher in the air than a longer hitting club. All of this must be taken into consideration for each and every shot. Another example is that, there are yard markers telling the golfer that they are 100 yards away from the pin, 150 yards away from the pin, and 200 yards away from the pin. What if your ball is between the 100 yard and 150 yard markers? A golfer will have to be able to judge the distance of where the ball is and select the correct club, if their judgment is off they will hit an errant shot. Bobby Jones, a famous golfer and course designer, said, “Golf is a game that is played on a five-inch course, the distance between your ears.” This beneficial to youth because it teaches them to use their critical thinking skills and how to make decisions on the fly. That is not the only social skills a child will learn. A child will also build friendships, learn to interact with people, and learn to respect others. A golfer will be paired with one to three other youth golfers in a round, during this four hour round they will have time to talk, joke, laugh, and share stories. From these interactions the child will learn to make friends and become more social (“The First Tee”). These interactions can turn into friendships that last a lifetime and will build a child's confidence by giving them a good group of like minded friends. Also, a golfer will learn how to respect others, in golf this is called etiquette (Gleason). A youth golfer will learn to be courteous of other golfers, for example, the child will learn to take his or her turn, to be quiet and respectful of another person while they are taking their stroke, and how to overall be polite and kind on the golf course. This will directly transfer into their lives because they will learn how to be kind and respectful of others, even if they do not know them
