Little Adjustments

Every summer I try to golf as I can. But this last summer I started to work more and golf less because I had to start saving for college. But on a Sunday early in June my uncle called me on the phone and asked me if I would go golfing. I reluctantly said yes because I was very tired and grumpy from work that week but I loved golfing with my uncle. But before I left my mother said with a smile “go out there have fun and kick uncle Josh's butt”. When I arrived at the golf course we play at. I waited for him and he was late as he usually was, but my uncle is a salesman and found us another tee time. I love my uncle Josh so I didn't care that he was late.
As I walked up to the first holes tee box I wiped off my drivers head cover pulled my driver out of my bag put my bag down I put my ball and tee in the ground. I setup my stance looked down at the ball looked down the fairway and hit the ball as hard as I could “whack”! The ball went soaring through the air. Watching it as it kissed the center of the fairway. I looked back at my uncle with a smile I said,” beat that”! “Ok I will,” He said with a chuckle. My uncle then teed his ball up and gave it a hard swing “flub a dub get over the tub” he said as his ball sliced into a water hazard. My uncle would always say funny things that would make me laugh and relax. My personal favorite was the time when we were fishing on mile lacs lake. We had lost our windsock and he said, “Well I guess we'll have to use Zach’s girl friends underwear”! After we golfed a few holes we started to talk about our lives and how we're doing. I told him I was having a rough time because my grandfather had just died. He then said “loosing a person is a tough thing but you have to thank God for the time that you had”. I

Behind me I could hear giggles from some of my teammates as they watched a movie in the van. Golf has been a passion of mine since my brother Jayden and I were little. I was in eighth grade at the time of this event. The previous year I went into sections as a seventh grader, expecting nothing of myself, and I ended up going to state. My teammate Amy also made it to state for her first year, and we had an amazing…

“Dear Zachary: A Letter to Son about His Father” is a terrific documentary about an old couple, David and Kate Bagby, who faced many challenges and dealt very well with them. The couple’s son, Andrew Bagby is murdered by his psychopathic ex-girlfriend, Shirley Turner. Shortly after Andrew’s death, Shirley announced her pregnancy. After hearing this news, the filmmaker Kurt Kuenne, Bagbys’s good friend creates a documentary to serve as both a memorial to Bagby and an introduction to the father the child would never know. Imagine if you ever had to see your son’s killer: what would you do? Would you be wise as David and Kate Bagby? Would you let grandchild’s custody be given to the murderer of your son? And the most important question is why didn’t the authorities do something? I know I wouldn’t be as wise as David and Kate and drive hours to see my grandchild at my son’s murderer’s house. If I were to physically harm that person, I would and I still wouldn’t be able to do what David and Kate did.…

    1. Abortion - The History of abortion goes back as far as ancient times because it's the only way to terminate an unwanted pregnancy. The methods are countless. (including the administration of abortifacient herbs, the use of sharpened implements, the application of abdominal pressure, and other techniques.) In 1973 in the United States Supreme court ruled that abortion was illegal unless it was to save the life of the mother. The case was Roe v. Wade and it took place on January 22, 1973. Crucial abortion battles are expected on the state level and runs through the judicial branch in our government. My ideology on this topic is that the problem with abortion in our today's world is that some people believe it’s not right for people to kill babies that haven’t had a chance to live, while other people argue that women should be able to do what they want with their bodies. In past research it’s shown that when the abortion rate went up, there were far less criminals…

This visit was much different than the others, he did not come to the door and my grandma was drinking her coffee and did not hear us at the door. I walked in and my grandma said “shhhh your grandpa says he is busy watching a movie” I just laughed because my grandpa never watched T.V. My grandma said the since he had been on the oxygen tank all he does is watch T.V. So we sat down and visit with my grandma for a little while. Then I heard the T.V. shut off. My grandpa walked out and said “WOW I did not know you were here, how was your drive”. I just laughed and asked him how his movie was; he sat down and told me that I needed to get a Wilson. I was like a Wilson, what is that? He told me that I needed to watch the movie “Cast Away” with Tom Hanks, to understand what he was talking about. He told me that if I got a Wilson I would never be lonely. I just looked at him and said ok I will. About a week after him telling me to watch the movie I did, I then understood what a Wilson was. Wilson was just a simple volleyball that made a man feel as if he was not alone and had someone to talk to. A few weeks after that visit I came back to see my…

Hole eight was my destination; that’s where I was to meet my team. After introductions, the horn blared and the tournament began. After three tremendous shots down the fairway, the last boy in our group, Thomas, proceeded towards the tee box. That’s when I noticed something was wrong with the way he walked. What is wrong with him? How is he going to tee off if he can’t even walk right? This was going to take forever! He finally swung and the ball flew about fifty yards in front of him. I thought to myself, “My grandma could shoot farther than that and she’s never even played golf.” This was just the start of how our day went. At every hole, the two boys and I came in close to par; while, Thomas always scored ten to fifteen strokes over par. I noticed, though, his unbridled excitement and smile never faded. Every time his ball hit the hole, his enthusiasm was uncontainable. There were high fives for everyone! Somewhere along the course, I knew that my mindset had changed. Thomas helped me realizing that there was so much more to playing the game then to just win. I aspired to always do my best and enjoy the thrill of just playing the game.…

It was a typical late summer day in my life; the all work no play world of Tanner Simons. Ok, maybe a slight exaggeration but seriously while other kids are swimming, playing in summer basketball leagues or hanging out. I am held captive forty-five miles from the nearest town. I get to spend my summers helping out on the family ranch. We have a lot of creek bottoms that require crossings. Over the years equipment has grown in size. On this particular day Dad decided we needed to replace some culverts with bigger ones. This will cut off a lot of miles and hill climbing with the stack mover. I am the youngest of six kids and was eager to prove what I could do. There were two crossings to dig out. I would start with the one by the corrals down below, about 2 miles south of our house. I drove the excavator down and began playing in the dirt. Did I mention that it was a hot afternoon and just the drive down was miserable? I moved on down the creek about another mile and a half and dove right in digging out the other old crossing. My brother came down to get me on the motorcycle and we headed back up to the house. I was feeling quite proud of myself and my accomplishments of the day. I was relaxing on the computer enjoying the air conditioning when my Dad and sister came in too. They had been moving cows and had went down below to put in the new culverts. Dad wanted to know why in the heck it took me all afternoon to dig out one culvert. I told him I got them both dug out and he said not to kid him, he was hot and tired! A heated argument happened before we finally figured out that I had dug out the wrong crossing! It is funny now but having to go back down and dig a third culvert that same afternoon was not funny at…

Sometime during the school day I received a text from my grandma telling me that her and my grandpa were going to pick me up at 2:20. As I walked outside a car started honking at me. Then, my grandma rolls down the window, but unexpectedly I see my uncle from Georgia in the driver seat. As I continued walking my uncle that thought he was hilarious at the time honked with every step that I took. While my grandparents thought it was the funniest thing ever, I thought it was very embarrassing. Minus the humiliating moment of everyone seeing me get in the non-stop honking car, I was very excited to my uncle Chris. All four of us then went back to my grandparents house to spare some time while my mom got off work at 4:30.…

The day that for so long I had been waiting for had finally arrived. It was my high school’s talent show. Excitement and nerves overpowered my body; at last I was going to dance in front of all my friends and family. I thought nothing and no one could ruin my day. That was off course until my brother Hector, who is 20 years old but still acts like a 10 year old, had to come and try to ruin it by telling me that I was an awful dancer and that his girlfriend, captain of the dance team and number one in my list of enemies, was going to dance way better than me. I started to get furious and I just couldn’t stay quiet. I was sick of him always trying to make me feel like everyone was better than me. So I started to scream at him without even thinking on what I was saying and the last words that I said to him where: You are the worst brother a person could have! If I just had the chance to replace you I would in an instant! I ran out the door and shut it so hard that I thought it would break. Little did I know that I would later regret those words.…
