Playoff Hole Fever Monologue
Playoff Hole Fever One early morning in May I was still half asleep as I gazed out the middle window of the school van. I was watching the sun rise as we drove to the Section 5A golf meet in Benson. The drive to Benson was an hour long, and I had gotten up early. I felt my heart beat in my head again, as I laid my chair back to sleep. Behind me I could hear giggles from some of my teammates as they watched a movie in the van. Golf has been a passion of mine since my brother Jayden and I were little. I was in eighth grade at the time of this event. The previous year I went into sections as a seventh grader, expecting nothing of myself, and I ended up going to state. My teammate Amy also made it to state for her first year, and we had an amazing …show more content…
The results are in and there seems to be a three-way tie. These three girls will be competing in a play-off hole to determine who will be moving on.”
My body was numb as I looked at my parents and sighed, “Oh great.” The announcer then called out the names of two girls I did not know and finished with my name.
My throat burned again as I trudged down to the first tee box. I stepped up to hit first because I wanted to get it over with before I got too nervous. An overwhelming number of people weighed me down with their wide-eyed stares as I walked up to hit. Eventually I swung, trying not to think about it. Dozens of eyes watched my ball as it veered slowly, but greatly, to the left. I paid no attention to the other girls as I approached my ball.
The trees I hit into were very large, making it impossible for me to hit over them. I concluded that going under them would be the best choice. My ball bounced in the center of the fairway. I still have a chance. My next shot felt amazing. When my club hit the ball perfectly, I watched it fly in the air towards the flag and roll up on the green. I took a huge breath of air that was overdue. While walking to the green I concluded the other players were both putting for fives and I was putting a long put for a

Then it was finally my turn and as I stepped up the wind died down, now was my time and I teed the ball up quickly. I stood back and looked down the fairway for the different variables on the hole. There was out-of-bounds was far right and there was woods on the left but the hole had a fairly wide fairway. I begin to think of how I plan to hit the ball and I plan on putting a slight draw on the ball to give it topspin so it will roll more. I feel good about my swing and when I felt ready so I stepped up to the ball and pictured my ball in the fairway. Then I brought the club…

    Short Biography: Tiger Woods

Eldrick “Tiger” Woods was born on the 30th of December 1975, the only child to biracial parents Earl, a retired lieutenant in the army, and Kultida a stay-at-home mother. Earl Woods was always the most influential person in Tiger’s life. At 10 months Tiger would sit in the garage watching his father repeatedly hit golf balls into a net for hours. It wasn’t long before Earl took Tiger out of the highchair and let him play with a small putter. “He picked up a putter, put a ball down, waggled, and hit the ball into the net. First time.” After that, Earl Woods would take his toddler son out on the practice green at the local military course, and eventually on the “eccentric-looking 18 hole course.” By four years of age, Tiger was hitting the ball perfectly; 70-yard shots that had a bit of a draw on them with a 2-½ wood. He could pop the ball up, hit it low, or hit it just with a normal trajectory, all with a 7-iron! “At four, he was like a shrunken 5-handicapper”, commented his coach Rudy Duran. Tiger had the gift for golf, he couldn’t tell you how he changed his swing at such a young age, all he could tell you was it was feel, pure and simple feel.…

Hole eight was my destination; that’s where I was to meet my team. After introductions, the horn blared and the tournament began. After three tremendous shots down the fairway, the last boy in our group, Thomas, proceeded towards the tee box. That’s when I noticed something was wrong with the way he walked. What is wrong with him? How is he going to tee off if he can’t even walk right? This was going to take forever! He finally swung and the ball flew about fifty yards in front of him. I thought to myself, “My grandma could shoot farther than that and she’s never even played golf.” This was just the start of how our day went. At every hole, the two boys and I came in close to par; while, Thomas always scored ten to fifteen strokes over par. I noticed, though, his unbridled excitement and smile never faded. Every time his ball hit the hole, his enthusiasm was uncontainable. There were high fives for everyone! Somewhere along the course, I knew that my mindset had changed. Thomas helped me realizing that there was so much more to playing the game then to just win. I aspired to always do my best and enjoy the thrill of just playing the game.…

“Katelyn you're up!” I heard my lanky redheaded coach Kevin screech. I slid on my batting gloves that were caked in dirt, and tightened my helmet that was meant for a 8 year old. I felt a tingling sensation rush through my body, I knew that I was going to do something great. It was the top of the 4th and we were down by two, already down a player so our outfield had to work vigorously to make sure not even a sickly hit could get past them. I could see Kenzie, a short stocky girl, with a bright pink helmet get ready to sprint to 2nd. As I got up to bat I felt the tingling sensation continue to grow, scared out of my mind that I would strike out and end the inning, I stepped up to bat.…

On the first tee, I was as nervous as an athlete competing in the olympics. I met my two playing partners, Jacob and Connor. Jacob was a towering fellow. Connor was a short, stringbean like me. Unexpectedly, my drive was smooth and rolled down the fairway as if I hit it on a tarmac. Jacob and Connor both hit their drives right down the pipe as well. As our group, made our ascent to the green, we all drew our putters like pirates would for a sword fight.…

The smell of my sweaty glove was filling the air around me. My tee shot off of hole number five soared in the sky like an eagle and rolled through the fairway. “Just don’t mess the next shot up,” I coached myself. I had doubts that I would not be able to accomplish the desired 45, as one shot can change your whole round. As I strolled down number five’s fairway, I could…

Home plate was only a few strides ahead of me, and I realized that this was it. I slammed my foot onto the plate, thinking to myself that I made it. Suddenly everything around me was loud. My hearing finally returned and I could hear the crowd cheering for me. I ran to the fence and found myself searching for his face. There Andrew sat on the bleachers, smiling at me and clapping his hands.. “I told you I would do it,” I hollered at him, which caused his head to be thrown back in laughter. I smiled proudly and turned my back towards the fence, seeing my teammates make their way onto the field, screaming and hollering my name. Everyone there couldn’t stop cheering and clapping in honor of me, and honestly, it was the best feeling in the…

I got to my team's field and saw the perfectly chalked batter's box and baselines. I went into to the dugout and saw the lineup and I was batting first! I had the same excitement in this moment as I do every time I get a king size crunch bar on Halloween. I started to warm up and I felt good. Game Time was coming up but it felt like forever. I was getting the feeling that you get when you put a hot pocket in the microwave and your are waiting for that very very long minute. The ump told us to go to the dugouts and we knew it was game time. I got my helmet and batting gloves on and grabbed my bat. I took a couple swings in the on deck circle then I stepped into the batter's box. I swung at the first pitch and heard a sweet pop off my bat and watched my line drive hit land in front of the centerfield man and I was on first base with a leadoff single. All the nervous energy I had was…

It was a cold, rainy, spring morning of my freshman year, and something noteworthy arose in my mind. I don’t know how this thought appeared, but I took a step, a big, courageous step, that has changed my life forever. I had always been the girl who follows the crowd and never did anything where I felt I would be judged or made fun of, but this overwhelming, yet amazing event gave me a different perspective on who I truly was. Next thing, I was standing in line to sign up for the girls golf team.…

The adrenaline pumped through my veins. My heart was beating so loud and fast. There was the ball, held in the referee's hands, about to be thrown up into the air. Picturing myself walking around a golf course carrying a heavy golf bag, and sweating profusely was not my idea of a good time. This is going to be almost as fun as going to the dentist, I thought as we drove down country club lane. Stepping out of the car I full heartedly expected an array of dirty looks and shaking heads, but to quite the contrary the opposing team all smiled a shook my hand. Each of them along with the coach introduced themselves and wished me luck on my first round. That was weird, I thought as I walked with Casey over to the putting green.…
