Gerald Durrell(1925-1955) moved from England to Corfu with his family when he was eight. He spent much of his time studying the island’s wildlife and surprising his family by keeping lots of very unusual pets in very unexpected places. He grew up to be a famous naturalist and a conservationist, leading expeditions to exotic places such as Argentina, Assam and Madagascar. Durrell dedicated his life to the preservation of wildlife. Its through his efforts that the Mauritius pink pigeon and Mallorcan midwife toad have been saved from extinction...
the style of the book
Gerald Durrell’s writing style is so natural, the book is written as if he is speaking directly to you, telling his story. I suppose that’s because its autobiographical, and also because he is a conservationist. In any event, I loved how it was written, I felt so friendly and open. The language used by Durrell to describe the island’s and his family’s adventures are so vivid, you feel like you are in Corfu. Corfu comes alive as a beautiful and colourful place, full of excitement. It is a very beautiful and artistically written book…
The unique thing in the book
The book is written with such interest by the author himself that , I felt I had seen all the incidents which happened in the book with my own eyes. It is truly a piece of art, I loved it. And as Sunday Times commented it is “BEWITCHING”!!! The interesting vocabulary used by Gerald Durrell did not make the book boring, but more interesting and I found that unique. While the book was not very emotional, I could feel what every character felt. The emotions were so strong. I felt that I was feeling happiness when anyone in the book was. An engrossing book I must
