They are frequently tossed off and have to get back on. With no cell phone service and barely any food. There seemed like there was no hope. As they battle hard in the freezing cold water they began to lose faith. Planes and helicopters are flying by but can’t see them. They’re frustrated mentally and physically exhausted. Corey smith is the first man to die due to starvation after seventeen hours in the water. The rest of the crew is in shock. He was a NFL player and in great shape. Five hours later they lose Marquis Cooper, the captain of the boat. He couldn’t survive and gave up .” It was the hardest thing ever in my life to watch my freind drift away literally, right before my eyes”(145). Nick couldn’t do anything to save the two. Now it was only Will and Nick left struggling on the boat. They had made it for thirty six hours, wide awake and threw the nights , so far and keep telling each other they could do it and someone is going to find them. At the forty two hour mark Will is taking in a lot of salt water and eventually can’t keep getting back on the boat and drowns. Now Nick devastated and exhausted has only one thing to do, wait. After seven more hours the coast guard rescue boats gets him and then call a helicopter for him to lifted off and rushed to the closest hospital. He’s in shock that he made it. His family and friends were waiting…
Consciousness starts to pump into his arteries. He's still sinking down the lake. He starts shouting and bellowing as if he's trying to free from something. He starts to pedal himself up. Upon reaching the surface he sharply draws…
In the split second it took to attempt the most crucial move in surfing—from passenger-prone to standing and in control—two thoughts flashed: Anything is possible. And: What the hell am I doing here? (P.2)…
Bethany decided to surf at Tunnels Beach, Hawaii, even though the waves were not a real challenge for her. As Hamilton lay on her surfboard waiting for a wave with her left arm hanging from the side, a tiger shark attacked her without any warning. It took a seventeen inch wide bite out of the surf board and her arm. In the ferocious fight for her life, the shark tore her entire arm off just below her shoulder before vanishing. Hamilton quickly swam to shore only using her remaining arm and Blanchard’s father used a surf leash as a tourniquet to help stop her from bleeding to death before she was rushed to a nearby hospital. This incident seemed to end Hamilton’s goal of being the greatest woman surfer and it almost ended her life. She had lost almost 70% of her blood that morning, but she didn’t give up the fight to…
It was a beautiful July day in 2014 when my family and I were camping at Holland Lake with our family friends Kinsey and Lauren. There wasn't a cloud in sight and the sun reflected off the bluish greenish water. The air smelt of smoke and fresh trees. Early in the morning when the campground is quiet you can even hear the waterfall. Holland Lake is a very busy lake with boaters, tubers, water skiers, ect. Since that day was so nice there were a bunch of boats on the lake the waves were huge. Kinsey, Lauren, Alex and I were all pretty close in age but Alex and Lauren were taller so they get the outside of the tube. When we all finished breakfast I changed into my swimming suit speedy fast and rode my bike as fast as I could to my cousins camper, Alex. I had to wait what felt like 5 hours for her to change. Once she was done we waited for Kinsey and Lauren at ¨The Beach¨. Alex and I killed time by talking about how much fun we were going to have…
Dr. Boggs sets all the equipment up so that we are ready to try the first activity which was wake surfing. The main activity my teammates wanted to do was wake surfing. None of them, including myself, had ever wake-surfed before, but it was one opportunity we could not miss out on. Cole, jumping out of his chair, could not wait to go first. He hopped out of the boat and swam towards the surf board. We all watched as Cole was about to be the first person on our team who would wake surf. “Now Cole there are a couple of steps that you have to do in order to get your board up and surf. First, you must lean back as far as you can with your left foot on the blue line and your right foot on the red line of the board. Next, when the boat starts to move, you have to press down on your right foot while tightly holding the rope with you left hand in front and right hand in the back. Finally, you will jerk forward and began to start surfing, but you have to stay low and on balance.”-Dr. Boggs. Cole was now ready to wake surf. He did all the steps Dr. Boggs had explained to him and he managed to fall face flat into the water. My teammates laughed as he tried to swim back to the board, but all that made me want to do was try it out for myself. Cole fell multiple times and was unable to stay on the board for more than ten…
I lower my head for the start and then…. Eeeeert!!!! The buzzer sounds and I throw myself into the water. Four laps, it's only four laps, I tell myself. I see the girl next to me pull ahead and I throw myself into every stroke.…
We were ready. Paddles in hand, canoe by our side, personal floatation devices, knee pads, and cameras. The afternoon sun shined on the lake, reflecting it across the calm waters. Crowds of people were enjoying their Sunday afternoon on North Beach at Devil’s Lake State Park. Young children stumbled on the moist sand and shallow waters as they tried to catch tadpoles with their small buckets. Soothing, a gentle breeze passed by as we walked towards the edge of Devil’s Lake. Marveling at the majestic mountain of cedars around the lake and smelling the damp sand, my dad, little sister, and I were all set to take on our first wilderness inquiry; canoeing across a lake. It was safe to say that we were in for an exciting adventure…
In the video I frequently had difficulty catching waves because of my poor paddling technique. Short slow wide paddling strokes caused very little movement and propulsion through the water, which resulted in me falling off of a lot of waves. There are two biomechanical principles that help explain propulsive forces produced by a surfer when paddling through the water, these include:…
I had already jumped off of it many times, but I knew he would be scared to do it. The rock is twenty-five feet above the water, and it was all there. I lept off first. After I rose to the water’s surface I started convincing Chandler to jump. He walked up to the edge of the rock and let his life jacket drop. “Don’t, it’s suicide,” I screamed. He bailed off of the rock and didn’t come up. I waited and waited. He didn’t come up, so I swam back to the boat. I climbed up the boat ladder and sat down. I looked to my right and I saw nothing. I looked to my left and right beside me was Chandler! He had swum under water all the way from the rock to the boat without me noticing. I felt so great because I had successfully taught Chandler how to swim. He thanked me again and again. I had to tip my hat to him because he did something that I couldn’t even do. We packed up the boat and headed home. At the beginning of the day I thought that it would be impossible to teach him, but turns out he was a better swimmer than me the whole…
Surfing was his life, he got his first surfboard when he was three and won the little league surfing championship at the age of six. “Do you want to enlist in the sport?” he asked. “Are you crazy, surfing isn’t even a real sport it’s so easy, I replied. He replied saying, “You know what, after you participate in the competition then come and tell me if you think it’s a real sport,” he said angrily and annoyed. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean it like that,” I screamed running after him but, he ignored me and walked away. After feeling a little bad, I realized that surfing really means a lot to him, and maybe I should try it out before I judge the sport. I purchased a long board surf board from a shack on the beach which was a nice aqua color that matched with the ocean and enlisted my name in the…
I have always loved going to the lake, but this time was a little bit different, we had a boat. It wasn’t a very big boat, but it was big enough to put a smile on my face. Not only did we have a boat, but we had a tube as well. Every other year I was told I wasn’t allowed to go in the tube; but after repetitive asking to ride in it my Dad finally said yes.…
Growing up on an island surrounded by water, it was hard to resist the temptations of the ocean. I was vicariously watching the older crew who were pretty gregarious bodyboarders , but as me and my friends grew older we got dexterous with bodyboarding. Our little crew was always trying to one up each other, we were pretty ostentatious when it came to that kind of stuff. We would always go out on the optimal days for bodyboarding, but some days we would just go out to facetious time. We would also go on days that were detrimental to our safety, but we didn't care, we would just go and not think about what we were doing.…
After we were all on the boat we had to go through a beautiful inlet that lead out into the ocean. We were then instructed on how put our life jackets and harnesses on. The instructor decided that I was going to be the first one to go up in the air. I made my way to the front of the boat and sat down on the deck so he could hook the parachute to my harness. Without a warning he let the parachute go and then I was ascending up into the air almost felt like the speed of light! As I was going up, he shook the line to scare me. Finally when I reached 500 feet, I could see the shore line. It was a breath taking view. I could see giant sea turtles and I even saw a shark. I was in the air about 30 minutes. Then I started descending down. When I was close to the boat, he dunked me into the same water where I had just moments earlier seen the shark and the sea turtles.…
Last Christmas, I spent 5 fun-filled days and 4 magical nights in Disneyland. Daily weather in Anaheim was beautiful. The driveway leading to the park entrance was lined with tall palm trees as they stretched to the heavens in the blazing sunshine.…
