In order to understand its foundations and discern the importance of it within U.S. culture, one must take the time to extract the historical context, key leaders in the United States, and the overall aims of various time periods. In this sense, this extends the possibility to lay out the changing attitudes about the over-arching aims of education. Four eras that provide great understanding of these concepts are the Early Republican, Progressive, Cold War, and Human Capital eras. These eras covered a large amount of time beginning in the 1800’s.…

One of the most widespread of the reform movements was the temperance movement, which called for reducing the use of ,or abstaining from, any alcoholic beverages. This particular movement came about specifically because the Second Great Awakening religious reformers called for individuals to lead “clean” lives and the movement gained movement across the country. Unfortunately the movement was somewhat unsuccessful. American reformers also sought to implement school reform. Before the early 1800s, education for most Americans was very basic. For most, this meant a few months of schooling a year in a one-room rural schoolhouse. The wealthy engaged private tutors and academies. The American education system has been on a gradual decline over the past several years and has become very non competitive to other nations across the world. This is quite surprising considering the fact that America has one of the most developed and strongest economies in the world yet is so far behind other countries in the education matter. One of the most recent debated issues in the U.S. Department of Education, is the 2002 No Child Left Behind Act signed by former President George W. Bush. According to many education intellects, this act is holding America back from achieving its full potential and getting back on track with the rest of the world. Diane Ravitch, who is a historian of American education, addresses this issue in “Time to Kill ‘No Child Left Behind.’” She says, “Congress should get rid of…

Public schools today are struggling to teach children the essential skills to become good, hard-working, citizens in the real world. After watching this video, I now realize how unacceptable public schools really are. My eyes have been opened as to why our schooling system is ranked so low compared to those of other countries.
