Gandhi and Jesus were both great leaders who have positively influenced millions of people to living a life in peace and harmony. Gandhi was a man who freed India from Great Britain and Jesus was a man who freed the souls of many from their sin. Many of their teachings are parallel to one another. Two of which were that both Gandhi and Jesus taught their followers to treat others the way they wanted to be treated and the emphasis on non-violence. Although Gandhi and Jesus' did not teach at the same time period, one will see that their teachings and practice were very alike.
Treating others equally were a similarity between Gandhi and Jesus. In the film that the class had watched, one can see that Gandhi was a person who reached out to many people including the untouchables. The citizens of India saw the untouchables as people to look down on and many people treated them poorly. Gandhi was someone who did not see them any different and he did not discriminate. Jesus also showed equality when He preached about the golden rule which is to do to others what you would have them do to you. Jesus teaches us that no matter who the other person may be, we must treat them fairly. The teachings of equality are again depicted in the Parable of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37) as it teaches us to love unconditionally even if it means to love our enemies. These two teachings relate to equality because it displays actions against discrimination and judgement.
The second similarity between Gandhi and Jesus were the emphasis on non-violence. One method that Gandhi used as an act of non-violence was fasting. An event in the movie where Gandhi fasted was when there was an argument over which religion would dominate India when it would be an independent country.
