Thomas Jefferson quoted in the Declaration of Independence “all men are created equal”(Jefferson par 1). What exactly does this mean? It means that all men are to have the same rights. That no one should be treated more superiorly and have more opportunities. Gay adoption is an extremely controversial issue in our world today. Many people believe that it should be banned, and that homosexuals shouldn’t experience the same rights that heterosexuals get. How does this viewpoint compare to what Thomas Jefferson said? Homosexuals are the same as anyone else in the world and offer just as much to the upbringing of a child. Just because a person lives a different way than other people doesn’t mean they should have their rights taken from them. Same-sex people should be allowed to adopt children just like the rest of the world without shame.
Although it seems to contradict society’s view of the traditional family, homosexuals should be allowed to adopt because they deserve equal rights, and sexual orientation is not a reasonable deciding factor in the qualifications of a parent. Also, allowing them to adopt can actually help society. Surveys suggest that a large majority of the American public generally favor anti-discrimination laws. Why then do minorities of people think gay couples should have the right to adopt? Adopting a child isn’t a right it’s a privilege. If this is true, there is still not a rational basis for denying homosexuals the “privilege” to adopt. It is clearly an anti-gay bias. Although only two states specifically ban adoption by gays, most states discourage it. Just as blacks and women have fought for equal rights, gays are now struggling to do the same. It is unfair to single out a group of people with many members who would make great parents.
It is questioned that homosexuals are not as qualified to be parents as heterosexuals. There has been much research done to prove that question false.
