60% of the total sales is headed by UAE from the total spend of e-Commerce in the GCC. This is shown by a new quarterly overview done for the ecommerce market across the GCC (Khaleej times). According to the recent MasterCard survey results, online shopping in UAE is growing increasingly popular. With the tele-communications authority designated to create an effective e-Commerce environment, the UAE government is leading the way for ecommerce in the country - Visa. The e-Pay gateway has had a huge impact in Dubai specifically. It enables customers to settle fees of e-government services online, in a secure environment, on a 24/7 basis. Internet usage and consequently online shopping is encouraged by this endorsement.
However, UAE still faces the same barriers that are seen around the world. The key concerns for people when choosing whether to shop online are lack of trust and payment security. An enhanced Data Protection Law was issued by Dubai International Financial Centre, in January 2007.They also appointed a Data Protection Commissioner to oversee its administration by the DIFC Authority. These both moves were designed to consolidate best practices which were followed internationally to be incorporated by DIFC. The Data Protection Law ensures the protection of any sensitive personal data and all personal information. It is compliant with the directives and provisions of the laws of the European Union and the guidelines of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) including on the transfer of data.
