Technology’s meteoric rise in abundance around the globe is looked at from two different standpoints. The first one is that technology is a positive effect towards the quality of life. Conversely, technology is also a weapon that leaves a trail of destruction, hackers use technology as leverage to steal identities. In both Elysium, directed by Neill Blomkamp and Fahrenheit 451, written by Ray Bradbury, Technology is used as a type of control by the government to keep the citizens disciplined and distracted from the real…
From the second century B.C.E to 200 C.E, technology has proved an important role in the modernization and advancement of empires such as the Han and Roman. The Han’s attitude towards technology was that of respect and appreciation, which eventually lead to the advancement of their great empire. The Romans, however, although dependent on technology for resources like water and everyday usages like roads, had a negative and degrading attitude towards technology. The different attitudes can be explained by the different empires and parts of society that each of the authors of the documents were a part of. The Han and Roman attitudes had a stark contrast in belief, along with the different in political and government leaders with the upper-class. Another document that would have been helpful in the analysis of the differing attitudes would be an excerpt from a lower-class worker. All of the documents provided were from either the upper-class or a political or government leader who all had their own beliefs on what technology is like without being in direct contact with tools like a worker would have been.…
As a society grows and develops, there are many issues the people must face during the process. One of the most important problems modern civilizations must solve is where and how they get their energy. In our day and age, we rely heavily on fossil fuels such as coal, natural gas, and oil. Patrick Moore, a writer for the Washington Post, composes an argument for nuclear power and recommends that it should be the future for all things energy. Moore’s argument is a convincing article that would most likely pull many neutral readers to see his side very clearly. The article gives all the pros to the uses of nuclear energy, and does an excellent job of addressing all possible counter-arguments.…
However successful the author’s appeal to logos, his essay relies too much on emotional appeal to the reader. When the author talks about the negative effects of the world’s largest energy project, the reader almost feels like he or she is being manipulated…
The attitudes that the Chinese Han dynasty and the Romans conveyed towards technology depended on the government’s views on technology and also the relationship of the government with its people and laborers, but ultimately it would benefit the people and contribute to the development of society. Technology was vital to a society because it made the decreased work for laborers significantly, as in Documents 3 and 4. Documents 1, 6, and 8 display how, in order for a society to develop, the growth of technology is essential. Document 2 shows how a government’s view on technology can influence whether or not it can be beneficial to society or not. Whether or not technology contributes to society also depends on how the state chooses to utilize it, which is expressed in Documents 5 and 7. The place in the social hierarchy the authors of the documents were from certainly was influential in how the author viewed technology. It was displayed in the tone of the writing whether it showed sympathy towards the people, spoke lowly of the people, or spoke highly of certain people who influenced technology. An additional document portraying a commoner’s attitude toward technology would be helpful to gain a wider view of the affect of technology on society. It would show whether or not the people of a state agreed with their rulers’ views on technology. Although the attitudes toward technology varied between the Han Chinese and the Romans, in the end, technology would be utilized to improve society.…
After they won the revolutionary war, the newly independent colonies had a new kind of battle ahead of them, setting up a new government to unite under. Their first attempt was the Articles of Confederation. This plan gave a lot of power to the states and did not set up a strong central government. It ultimately failed which caused the framers to hold another Continental Congress to decide on a new way to set up the government. From this was born our great Constitution.…

In Robert Whelchel’s Article, “Is Technology Neutral?”, he discusses how the engineering profession needs to address the issues surrounding technologies. He starts of by defining what it means for a technology to be morally neutral. A technology is not neutral in the sense of creating value; it can create good or bad for society. So Whelchel rephrases the question as, “is technology value-free?” In order to assign value to a technology, there must be some value system. However, giving technology value means it has a viewpoint that frames reality according to these values. Technology is becoming more and more intertwined and influential in society and a new manner of viewing it needs to be deployed before a certain restricted viewpoint on technology…
Brook Gladstone and Josh Neufeld in their thesis states that we get the media we deserve and it’s not controlled by humans but our dark thoughts. However, it’s vice versa, media does control what we do or sometimes it even takes over what we perceive to be true and as well as our lives. In now a day when looking around the environment everyone seems to have some machines with them, such as phones. By looking around it seems that the people are the ones being centered on technology. Overall just like how the moon revolves around the earth, the people revolve around machines. However Gladstone and Neufeld do have good visuals, style, and context that engage and connects with the reader in a unique way that is different from other authors. To put it briefly they had good illustrations that attract the audience towards the article. As well as having different forms of history really made the article stand out. Also the way they embedded themselves within the article made it as if they were there with us, guiding their audience through. All in all Brook Gladstone and Josh Neufeld have a unique, interesting and attracting article that gets the audience connected with…
This idea of negatively depicting technologic dominance is similarly illuminated by Scott. To emphasise the age of globalisation, consumerism, corporate domination and commercialism, Scott has intended the dystopian setting of P.A. 2019 to represent our potential existence should we let technology get out of control. The establishing panoramic long shot of industrial columns spewing fire against the eternally dark horizon generated fear for what our society might come to be. The…
This week you have learned from political theorist, Langdon Winner that technological artifacts are political. Examples are aircraft, bus overpasses and tomato harvester. You have also learned that political systems influence technological development with globalization impacting global economic and political integration. The Millennium Development Goals (MDG) established by the United Nations are an attempt to establish global solidarity around pertinent issues that would benefit the human race.…
Charles parker was a brilliant jazz musician. He was so innovative and played with such genius that he has influenced all jazz musicians regardless of their time period. One can only speculate what might have happened with Jazz if Charles' life was not cut short due to intense drug use as was so common in the musician scene. Then again one can only speculate weather or not Charles' Jazz would have been as great as it was if it were not for the drugs that he consumed on a daily basis. Did the drugs make Charles' Jazz what it was or did the man have the built in ability to squeeze the perfect notes out of a saxophone making it do his will without hardly having to give it a thought.…

Technology have been the root of some of the most beneficial and also some of the most harmful creations throughout history. With something so influential, the question becomes whether creators of new technology should be responsible for the good or bad that this new technology creates. In the novel ‘’Frankenstein’’ Frankenstein is a scientist who brought a monster to life The use of technology used in this novel caused the monster to murder all of Frankenstein's friends and family, because of irresponsible behavior and not take care the monster he created. But in ‘’’Shading the Earth’’ the technology of the sun shades may stop global warming which potentially saved the earth. With the increase of technology ,there also comes with responsibility…
Humanity or Mankind has evolved from the essence that separates humans from beasts: the ability to use the mind for reason. Reason is the ability to analyze, create, deduce, and formulate. It is reason that enables human beings to strive to invent; it is through invention that mankind has developed society and created a better world. we could say that technology is the sum total of instrumentally useful culturallytransmissible information. Technology, a word with Greek origins, is defined as, “the practical application of knowledge especially in a particular area”. Technology is a word used to collectively describe or portray the advancements, abilities, creations, undertakings, views, and knowledge of a singular group of persons: we as humankind.…
