1-From the Reicher and Haslam prison study
(a) describe what is made by tyranny...
Tyranny-the oppressive use of power by one group over another in an unequal social system.
(b)describe one of the independent variables manipulated to create a situation in which tyranny could develop... one independent variable was the permeability /impermeability of the groups(prisoners/guards). the switch from one group to another.
(c)identify two of the dependant variables that were measured in the study... swab stick tests - swabs were taken from the inside of each person's mouth to test for stress hormone levels.
Psychometric tests - these were taken to measure different things relating to the participant such as ... depression, authoritarianism and identification with groups.
2- describe how the sample was recruited in Reicher and Haslams BBC prison study.
Adverts were placed in national press and leaflets accumulated 332 males . 3 screening stages took place before selection of the final groups. stage 1 - psychometric tests- results had to show the participant was low on depression/ aggression/paranoia etc. stage 2 - psychologist assessments were taken over a weekend. stage 3 - police checks and character references .
27 people got through the screening stages and then 15 were selected.
3- how did Reicher and Haslam allocated participants to their respective roles of prisoners and guards. the group of 15 was divided in two groups of three, then one in every group was chosen to be a guard and the others prisoners. they were chosen at random.
4- From Reicher and Haslams BBC prison study, outline two reasons why they were given uniforms.
Taking away the prisoners own clothes can increase the tyranny (and make the prisoners feel like they had less power than the guards). taking away the prisoners clothes also increases the ecological validity as in real prisons the prisoners dot wear their own clothes so it make
