Rhetorical Modes Matrix

Rhetorical modes are methods for effectively communicating through language and writing. Complete the following chart to identify the purpose and structure of the various rhetorical modes used in academic writing. Provide at least 2 tips for writing each type of rhetorical device.

Rhetorical Mode | * Purpose – Explain when or why each rhetorical mode is used. | Structure – Explain what organizational method works best with each rhetorical mode. | Provide 2 tips for writing in each rhetorical mode. | Narration | To tell a story about an event. | Chronological order because you tell a story from beginning to end. | Understand what your purpose is from the beginning.Create strong detail; keep the human senses in mind. | Illustration | Clearly demonstrates and supports a point through the use of evidence. | Order of importance because it arranges ideas according to their significance. | Do not over explain concepts readers are already familiar with.Use evidence that is appropriate to your topic and your audience. | Description | To make sure the audience gets fully immersed in the words written. | Spatial order because it arranges ideas according to physical characteristics or appearance. | Avoid using “empty” descriptors such as, “good, terrific, and nice”. Use details to express thoughts in ways that will register with others. | Classification | To break broad subjects down into smaller, more manageable, more specific parts. | Each body paragraph of a classification essay is dedicated to fully illustrating each of the subcategories. | Make sure to break down any given topic at least three different ways.Avoid setting for an overly simplistic classification. | Processanalysis | Explains how to do something and/or how something works. | Typically follows chronological order because the process is conveyed in the order in which the steps occur. | Always have someone read your
