Assessment of Performance Overall, this negotiation went very well for me and really ended in my favor for the most part. After Pat confessed to stealing the information related to the new “Alvin in Wonderland” game, he and I came to an agreement that I would “come across” the missing tapes and he would resign. We also agreed that should this arrangement become public, I would turn him in for theft and only at that point likely put my job at risk. While I was fortunate that this negotiation went well for me overall, it was largely due to the fact that the opposing party approached the negotiation in the manner that I had hoped. Had he come into the negotiation with a more combative approach, I think I would have been at a loss. With this in mind, as far as improvement goes I think I definitely need to work on preparing myself for the other party to act in a way that is least favorable to my desired outcome and have plans and points ready to deal with such a situation.
Plans for Improvement I really got all of the information I was hoping for from the opposing party, however this was less a result of probing questions posed by me and more due to the fact that he was upfront and forthcoming about his connection to the missing tapes. While I was appreciative of his directness and honesty, I do not expect this approach from every negotiator I work with in the future. The greatest aspect of my negotiation skills that I need to work on is being prepared for the opposing party to be completely combative and unwilling to compromise. Working on being prepared for how I would handle such a negotiation I feel will be crucial to my success in the future. As an individual that is conciliatory but also competitive by nature, I do think I am evolving by being determined to find a solution that benefits both parties instead of “winning” and also by not letting my emotions get the best of me and
