13 Reasons Why Review
13 Reasons Why Critical Review

The plot of Thirteen Reasons Why consisted of a girl named Hannah Baker; who over a course of three years undergone many conflicts that led to her suicide. The twist to this high school teen’s suicide story is she recorded her last moments on audiotapes. She had everything planned out from the start. Where each tape would go, what order, and a map; so they could visit exactly where each event had occurred. On those tapes Hannah talked about thirteen people and their effect on her. All the people listed on Hannah’s tapes had negatively affected her in some way except the twelfth person. The twelfth person was Clay Jensen.

Clay was someone who was in Hannah’s life from the beginning. Even though Hannah and Clay never spoke until the end, he was always there. When Clay received a box of tapes with no return address his first thought was how was he going to listen to them. When he remembered his friend had a Walkman to play the tapes on.

As Clay began listening to the tapes he questioned what he had done to Hannah that would include him on the list. This was a common question from Clay throughout the book. As he listened to a dead girl’s voice he became more and more interested in Hannah’s story and what had happened to her. But Clay wanted more information about how she was feeling. So he followed the stars marked on the map she had given each person on the tapes.

My opinion on why he went everywhere Hannah had been is to be there as Hannah was talking about her experience in that place. One place Hannah had the people on the tapes go, was Rosie’s. Rosie’s was a “hip” diner where no one would dare be caught eating their alone. Hannah’s conflict there was that a boy asked to meet her there and he didn’t show up. She sat there for hours until Marcus walked in. He then apologized for being late and told her he wasn’t sure if they were being serious about the date. He then proceeded to try and touch her inappropriately. Hannah

“And there in your eyes, what was it? Sadness? Pain? You moved around me and tried pushing your hair away from your face. Your fingernails were dark blue.” (259). Clay was having a flashback to when he last saw Hannah through the halls and how she looked like, when he saw her and how sad she looked. How this is important is because she was giving him a sign that she isn’t alright and boxed up. Also, she was trying to hide the fact that she was depressed,…

People are always going to ask the question “What if?” “What if I didn’t go that way?” or “What if I never met this person?” Well, maybe we should all ask the question, “What if Clay Sizemore’s mother never was killed?”There are many important events in Clay’s Quilt that help give us an outlook on Clay Sizemore’s life. If Clay’s mother hadn’t passed away then he probably never would have lived with his Aunt Easter and Uncle Paul. This also means he wouldn’t have met all the townspeople and neighbors around him. Living with his aunt and uncle is a major factor to the whole plot.…

The movie Stand By Me is based upon a novel by Steven King. It doesn't have the same eerie feel as some of his other books and is generally a more serious movie. It takes place in the small town of Castle Rock, Oregon. It is the middle of the summer in approximately the early 1960's. The kids are bored and that is the setup for their adventure to go find a dead body in the woods.…

Would Justin have affected Hannah's life the most? He was her first kiss, in a way he began everything. If not for Justin, the rumors about Hannah would not have started. Perhaps it was Marcus Cooley who impacted Hannah's life the most, And I couldn't look away as your fingertips caressed my knee...and started moving up (Page 142, Thirteen Reasons Why, Jay Asher), quotes Hannah Baker as Marcus moved his hand up her leg, the first person to ever do that do Hannah. Marcus touched Hannah in that way without her permission, without any sign of her wanting him to. Maybe it was Bryce Walker who held the most reason to why Hannah broke down, And then, just like…

I had intended on going to the vigil Wednesday night (2/8) but much to my dismay, there was no vigil (or I missed it). So instead of attending a diversity event for this paper, I watched a documentary on Netflix called 13th. This film discusses the issue of racism in the United States criminal justice system; specifically relating to how the 13th amendment transformed the view of African Americans from slaves to criminals.…

Jay Asher's book 13 Reasons Why is entertaining. His story of Hannah Baker and her feelings is disturbing. The main theme is: 'Think before you act; you could be hurting someone without knowing it' makes me feel depressed. Asher's use of imagery on page 160, "Hannah always looked depressed. The smile on her face never reappeared," supports that theme because it shows that the way people acted really did have a negative effect on Hannah. The tone throughout the book is dark, but sometimes shifts to upsetting to make the reader feel downcast.…
